Indulgences in Bangkok

An April 2002 trip to Bangkok by beautysan

I went to Bangkok for 2 weekends when I was on business trip based in Korat. The short period there was very eventful, and full of indulgences, especially when I splurge on good food and quality accomodation.

Shopping
Staying in JW Marriot Hotel is already the highlight of the day. You could soak yourself in the luxurious bath listening to soft music, or splurge on the best steak in town by the in-house New York Steak House, all in the privacy of your own room. Shopping in MBK can be described in one word - GREAT!Things are exceptionally cheap, and the variety are so diversified. If you could speak Thai, you can buy things at an even more attractive price! Clubbing - Route 66, a paradise for clubbers who love crowds and people-watching.Ample parking space just opposite the club.

Quick Tips:

Beware of tuk-tuk drivers who will try to con you into taking his accomplice's tuk-tuk to a remote 'attraction' as claimed by him. He will first tell you that the place you are walking to is already closed(when it is actually still open),and that you should take the tuk-tuk to go to another place which will be closed in an hour's time, and that place is even a much better place than the one you are going to. Do not believe him, he'll charge you a sky-high rate and bring you to a not so popular sight which is far-off.

Air pollution in Bangkok is considered one of the worst in the world! Policemen direct traffic wearing a face-mask, you might want to consider emulating the policemen!

Check the closing time of major attractions before you go is a wise move to avoid disappointment. Some places do close very early, The Grand Palace is closed at 3.30pm.

Best Way To Get Around:

The public transportation in Bangkok is sufficient for you to get around the tourist attractions. That is if you combine skytrain, bus and also boat through canals in order to reach your destination without being delayed too much by the traffic. Driving by car, though convenient, is a big NO-NO when you are stucked in a massive traffic congestion.

JW Marriot Bangkok
This 5 star hotel immediately made me feel at home. The lobby was beautifully adorned with 2 lilly ponds. With the aid of fine lightings, the flowers looked especially attractive and sweet against the greenish blue backdrop of the pond. The interior decoration is a blend of the spirit of Thailand and the tradition of Marriott, displaying a touch of class and elegance without being ostentatious.

The guest room is imbued with such charming and peaceful ambience that it is definitely a wonderful retreat after a long day. The interior is luxuriously designed for comfort, especially the bathroom where you could unwind by soaking in the bathtub (bath salt provided), listening to soft music. The cozy corner with complimentary fruit basket, cookies on the work desk, Belgian chocolate on the bed at night…in Marriott, you’ll be pleased with surprises after surprises. In-room safe is available for guests’ convenience. Guests can even utilize the express check-out service where it is only a few click away on the TV. Everything is operated under such impressively smart system. Catered with excellent on-site restaurants, you can’t help but to pamper yourself with fine dining and quality food. Talking about indulgences, the hotel also have a full spa, whirlpool/jacuzzi, sauna, outdoor pool and health club.

The service is superb, they even have 'Lost & Found' department to keep the stuff that you left in the room after you check out. I forgot my little beanie baby and left it in my room after checking out and continued to my next destination. By the time I found out about it, a week already passed by. I hastily called the hotel (at 3am!) and they actually searched the ‘Lost & Found’ department for me at that hour and appeased my heart.

Centrally located and having a skytrain station (Nana Station) just at the doorstep, transportation will never incur a problem.

JW Marriott Bangkok definitely gave me the most memorable hotel experience I ever had. Think of indulgences, think of JW!

I ordered room service from Marriott Cafe for breakfast. This is one of the best breakfast I ever had. I ordered a Dutch Pancake and a Tiramisu (total 340 Bht) The tiramisu was truly excellent, soft, creamy but not too rich. Just thinking of it is mouth-watering! The pancake was average, served with maple syrup and beautifully topped with fruits.

The breakfast set also comes with a variety of bread fresh from the bakery. This set was in such generous portion that it was enough to fill my stomach until evening.

Restaurant | "New York Steak House"

New York Steak House boasted the best steak in town, recommended by some guide books. I tried the US Mignon(1500 Baht) - prime beef with black pepper sauce, which was highly recommended by the waiter and the Broccoli Monterre(140 Bht). The beef was juicy and tender. The broccoli deliciously cheesy. Not a bad choice but it is a bit overpriced. The down thing about this restaurant is it is only open for dinner.
