Short Break in Barcelona (with the kids)

A June 2002 trip to Barcelona by Hels Bells

We bravely took our two small children (8 months and 2 years) on our first family city break.

Our trip was tailored to suit the needs of our children but we still found plenty to do. Parc de la Citudella and Barcelona Zoo, Parc Guell, the Aquarium and the Cathedral were all enjoyed by us all. The Sagrada Familia was appreciated from the outside (unable to go in with a double buggy!).

Quick Tips:

Although the Spanish love children they make few concessions to them, therefore don't expect to find things such as highchairs or childrens menus in restaurants. They will of course make smaller portions of food from the main menu for your little ones.

Best Way To Get Around:

Many of the sights of central Barcelona can be reached on foot. The metro is good for getting to the Sagrada Familia and further reaching sights. We took a taxi to Parc Guell to avoid some of the uphill effort. If travelling with small children find out which metro stations have lifts to platform level, Passeig de Gracia and Sagrada Familia are two.

Hotel

This is a one star hotel in an excellent central location just off the Ramblas. The rooms were clean and tidy with ensuite facilities and a television. There were no tea or coffee making facilities. Breakfast consisted of a tea and coffee making machine in the hallway (switched on only at breakfast time) and some biscuits/muffins. Beers are available from reception. There is a tiny lift to take you to the first floor where the hotel is situated which meant we had to collapse our buggy and carry the children each time we entered and left the hotel. We had to take our own cot for the baby as the hotel does not provide them. I would suggest that this is reasonable budget hotel accommodation for those without small children.
