Overview

Even though Kauai generally has a slower pace than Oahu or Maui, "Adventure Activities" such as helicopter tours and boats rides to the Na Pali coast are highly advertised and discounts/freebies for these are a major enticement to sit through time-share presentations. Certainly, the Na Pali coast (by air, sea, or land) is not to be missed. Exploring Waimea Canyon and snorkeling at Poipu Beach are also essential. But like the other islands, it doesn't get much better than relaxing in a lounge chair by the pool with a good book in one hand and a pina colada in the other!Quick Tips: If this is your first trip to Kauai, you might do better staying on the east coast of the island ...Read More

When we traded our Maui EVR time for Kauai, we were told that we would be put in a "garden/mountain view" room, so we were pleasantly surprised that our room, despite being in the corner of the property, had a very nice ocean view. There are 10 buildings, most with 4 floors. We were on the top floor and found that to be much better than the ground floor. Because of the sloping property, in some areas you have to go down to the first floor making the entry and hallway areas of the ground floor somewhat dark and uninviting and the lanais don't feel very private. The resort is VERY family oriented and all we saw were families with kids (including us). There were kids of all ages and our 12 yea...Read More

There are nice paved pathways around the grounds, one of which is part of the Koloa Heritage Trail. The pathways link up with ones going through the nearby Poipu Kai and Hyatt Regency resorts. I walked these every day in different combinations and loops and found them very enjoyable. Since there is no beach at the EVR, the lagoon shaped pool has sand on one side. I'm not yet convinced that this is such a good idea. The sand is really a fine gravel and not very comfortable underfoot and of course it also gets in the pool and collects in certain areas. On the other hand, it washes off real easily. The pool itself is fairly shallow except in one small area where it's 4 feet deep and ha...Read More

The Beautiful Garden Isle

Attraction | "Don't miss these places!"

There isn't much more I can say about these places that isn't already covered in a good guidebook such as The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook or Moon Publications' Kauai Handbook except for this: DO NOT MISS THESE PLACES! Snorkeling at Poipu Beach: Excellent close-in snorkeling and a good place for the beginner. Keep an eye peeled for monk seals -- both times we were there, a seal plopped himself down and forced the lifeguards to cordon off part of the beach. Kilauea Lighthouse: Spectacular views, great bird-watching, and friendly and knowledgeable volunteers to answer your questions. Don't be cheap, make sure you pay the $3 honor system fee at the entrance. It's worth it! Wa...Read More

Dining on Kauai

Story/Tip

First of all, EVERYTHING is pricey on the island. So expect to pay more than you pay at home for every type of restaurant from fast food to haute cuisine. There are many great places to eat on the island and you'll go nuts (and broke) if you try to hit them all. Pick a few and enjoy! BURGER PLACES: We ate at WAY more burger joints than we thought we would, but for good reason -- they were great! Most places use the local beef and charbroil them. Burger King - I only mention this one across from Kukui Mall because they have a Playplace. The dining area gets real warm so eat at the outdoor tables (but watch out for chickens). Beach Hut - Located near Kalapaki Beach, this ...Read More
Chickens At Kokee Lodge Photo, Kauai, Hawaii
Quote:
The three most common questions you hear from tourists on Kauai are: 1. "What's with all these chickens?" 2. "How do I get this red dirt stain off my shoes?" 3. "A loaf of bread is HOW MUCH?" The last time we were on Kauai in 1987, I remember that there were chickens wandering around at a few remote locations, but now they are everywhere! The story that I heard was that they really proliferated after the hurricane in 1992 when a lot of domestic ones escaped and mingled with the wild ones. They are harmless and seem to have the good sense to stay out of the road. I don't recall seeing a single road kill during our trip. Most places discourage you from feeding the...Read More
