A May 2001 trip to Munich by Tolik

We visited Munich on our way to Bad Gastein where we had a great time staying at the RCI's resort Bayerhous Clubhotel. Munich (München) offers the best museums in Germany (and the best beer).

Overview

Munich
We had only one day to spend in Munich, but its wealth of culture, history and architecture left us longing for another visit. City's central square is Marienplatz. Do not miss the neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus, the Glockenspiel chimes with a display of knights and dancing coopers (daily 11am, noon, 5pm and 9pm).

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

We arrived to the ultramodern Flughafen München (International Airport). Here we bought a Partner Tageskarte (DM 28) which can be used for up to 5 people traveling together in the city (subway, bases, streetcars) and from the airport to the city. S-Bahn #8 train connects the airport with Hauptbahnhof daily every 20-min. EurAide in English located on the train station along track 11 (room 3).

This wonderful museum offers excellent selection of 18th and 19th-century art. My favorite are some paintings by Monet, van Gogh and Manet…but there are also David, Gainsborough, Goya and many others

Stroll along the Marienplatz - the Munich`s hub. And the heart of the Altstadt. Platz is dedicated to the patron of the city, whose golden statue atop a huge column stands in the center of the square. On its north side is the Neues Rathaus (New City Hall) built in 19-th century Gothic style.

There is another sight in the heart of the Altstadt a visitor should not miss – Frauenkirche. The onion-domed towers of the 15th century cathedral are one of the city`s landmarks.
