Kiawah Island is truly a planned community. There are single family homes as well as condos. There are so many condos though that we had to work hard to find our street at night when it was dark! There are breathtaking golf courses and a magnificent beach. Lagoons dot the area and yes, beware because there are gators in there. What is very apparent right from the beginning of your stat is the island doesn't have is an over abundance of commercialism. It is Hilton Head minus a zillion resorts and as many stip malls.

While riding, we stopped at wild life sanctuaries, watched the gators with their mouths wide open hoping for some prey to appear and laughed ourselves silly as we watched the pelicans dive bomb the ocean in search of fish. What head aches they must have had.
The beach was a short walk from our condo and we enjoyed the fact that while there were alot of people around, you just were not near anyone.
Quick Tips:
A trip to Charleston is a must from here. It is a 40 minute ride away and through moss covered trees like you read about in books. Visit the marketplace and take a tour by horse drawn carriage. Be sure to have dinner and enjoy the southern hospitality and greens.
There are many gracious plantations to visit along the way with their formal gardens and magnificent homes. It will let your mind wander back to other times.
Count how many different species of nature you can see. We played a game to remember our ever growing list each day. Rent a bike to explore and see the Inn and shopping area on the island.
Best Way To Get Around:
A car is a must as is a bike. Both of these will allow you to do all the things you want to do comfortably. Roller blades work well here too. Read Less
