Brighton Beach (UK) Memoirs

A May 2002 trip to Brighton by ziggypup

On 5/15/02 the sun was shining and the temperature reached the low 80's in Brighton. Incredible weather for England at that time of year! All over East Sussex, workers were leaving their jobs for lunch, then going to the beach instead of going back to work!

The "beach" at Brighton is a must. If you're an American and you're used to white sand beaches, well... Get Over It! It's a bit rocky, but no more so than the island of Capri.

You'll also want to see the magnificent Royal Pavilions, which close early, then the famous Brighton Pier for thrill rides, games of chance and great junk food.

Quick Tips:

As soon as you get to Brighton, pick up some brochures and find out what concerts, plays, etc. are scheduled. Then, you'll want to plan your evening entertainment a.s.a.p., so you're not disapointed.

Best Way To Get Around:

Find a legal place to park your car for the length of your stay - then leave it there and walk. Parking can be very difficult. You don't want to park illegally, and come out and find your car has been "booted," or worse , towed!

My husband and I stayed in the "Red Room," an en-suite room facing the relatively quiet street, which features a beautiful four-poster bed. Our daughter had a small single next door, which did not have its own bath, so she shared ours. Total price for the 2 rooms was 90 Brittish pounds, or about $135 US. This hotel warns you in advance that they tack on a 4% surcharge for payment by credit card, so try to pay with cash.

Breakfast was nice, in an eclectic Art Decco/1950's dining room. The hotel is an easy walk to the beach, Brighton Pier, the Royal Pavilions, and the shopping/dining district.

I'm checking "Family" and "Gay and Lesbian." I stayed there with my family, most of the other guests appeared to be Gay or Lesbian. If any heterosexuals have problems with that, then they should stay at one of the less charming places that cater to "Old Biddies" instead!
