Bargain Fishing in Lithuania

A June 2002 trip to Lithuania by been there-again-again

Quote: Found by chance - stayed by choice. Popular with Lithuanias, undiscovered by the rest of the world. On the shores of Pristine Lake Vistytis, surrounded by pine forests. Great for fishing, walking, breathing pure air, eating organic foods.

Bargain Fishing in Lithuania

Overview

Here I stand on the shores of the lake, looking at the coastline where Russia and Poland almost meet yet where I cannot visit because I do not have a visa. Glorious sunsets over the lake, quite boat-rides and some great fishing (I almost caught one over a metre in length). Lots of history here too. Lithuania as a country has changed hands a number of times yet the Lithuanian people are stoic and beleive in better things to come. The forest is full of berries and mushrooms. Strange animals roam at night - wild boar, deer, elk, wolves and foxes. Sometimes I can hear their mournful cries. I am glad its not the hunting season yet. Amazingly a huge stork nests unconcerned atop a tall dead tree. I...Read More

Room with three piece en-suite washroom, in a three storey brick building, of which there are three. I could have stayed in a log cabin in the pine woods at a cheaper rate but it had shared washrooms. for more information go to www.viktorija.lt

The place caters for groups so the tables are all large with benches and banquettes. There is a stage and a small dance floor. The balcony has tables for six and overlooks the dance floor. Food is organic and mostly fresh fish and fresh pork. Wild mushrooms in season. Great breads (the owners also have a bakery in the village) Smashed Berries is a dessert to die for. Berries picked from the nearby forest in a thick sauce covered with a custard type topping. Mmmmmmmmm

Peaceful, invigorating, challenging and very beautiful. Very little habitation around the lake. Areas surrounding the lake are partly owned by, Lithuania, Russia, Poland.

Don't get out of your boat on Russian soil without a visa.

Restaurant will supply substantial packed lunches and beer is only 0.60EUR per bottle.

Most of the food is organic and locally grown. Hotel will cook your fish - no charge.

Location is also great for hunting in season, boar, wolves, deer, elk, fox, hare etc.

Just about totally undiscovered by foreigners and not everyone speaks English but they do try!!!

You can see between 100 and 150 different birds here, many quite rare and some local. The owner installed a tall, dead tree with a platform on the top. Within four days there was a huge, untidy nest on top. Eggs were rapidly laid and very soon the young appeared. Every night I used to walk up the hill and gaze down at the birds. I had hoped to see them take their first flight but I did not realize that it takes two months of mothering before they take flight. Guides from the Lithuanian Omithological Society will take groups of up to 8 people into the woods and marshes for about $50.00 US a day. per group.
