Enchanting Medieval Town

An April 2002 trip to Rothenburg by Peggy M.

As the wheels on our luggage rumbled along the cobblestones, my husband and I felt like we were stepping back in time. Each tower we passed through brought us deeper and deeper into a land of enchantment.

Rothenburg is best seen on foot. Walk the wall that encircles the town for a wonderful vantage point. Stroll the cobblestone streets and enjoy the architecture and ambiance.

For expansive views of the valley below, walk to the outlook at the end of the Castle Garden. From the Castle Garden, take the path down to the valley where you can look back and see Rothenburg as it was seen by villagers long ago.

Be sure to take the Night Watchman walking tour. Hans-Georg Baumgartner, as the night watchman, makes history come alive. Meet the night watchman at the Market Square at 8:00 p.m.

Other highlights in Rothenburg are: the Marktplatz (Market Place), St. Jakob's Church, St. Wolfgang's Church, and the Medieval Crime Museum. Kathe Wohlfahrt's Christmas Village is worthwhile even if, like me, you are not into shopping.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

This hotel was charming; it had the feel of a small inn. We had a lovely pine- paneled room with a king-size bed. The bed was made in a unique fashion. Instead of a top sheet and shared blanket or bedspread, we each had our own personal down comforter--very cozy.

The hotel is conveniently located near the Castle Gate and Castle Garden. A generous continental breakfast was included.
