A September 2001 trip
to Bangkok by nicoladicola
Quote: Culture shock! Everything I had ever read about Bangkok could not have prepared me .10 hours later we went to the train station to book a train out of there for the next day.But something strange happened and we ended up spending 2 weeks in this becoming city.
Although the Tuk-Tuk drivers are persistant, I thought they were an excellent way of seeing the city. The drivers literally take their life (and yours) in their hands as they tear round, weaving in and out. I found them as adrenalin kicking as a rollercoaster while I hung on screaming!!
I also experienced a Thai massage: 2 local ladies pulled and stretched me for about an hour and a half - but afterwards I felt great.
Our first impressions of Bangkok were of a dirty, noisy, crazy city and after 2 weeks there we still thought it was noisy and dirty and definitely crazy! But also we found it was a food and shopping heaven.Lovely and friendly people.Beautiful temples and lots of culture.I'm so glad we didn't get that train the very next day!!

There are dorms as well as doubles. The rooms are equipped with mosquito mesh on the windows and a high powered fan. There is a large selection of Thai and English food available which you can order 24 hours a day - likewise with alcohol. A lot of people stay at the guest house long term whilst working, so there is a myriad of local information to be gleaned from these nomads!
The best way to describe it is as a travellers swap-shop. All the travellers sit over a beer swapping their travel stories.
Most people use Tavee as their home from home in Bangkok, they go travelling and return to Tavee. They even let you leave luggage there whilst you go off on your adventures. So when you do return you often bump into others whom you met previously!! We met lots of characters there!!
