This region has a wealth of activities and attractions to keep you occupied from wineries to beaches, from museums to river cruises and from farm experiences to wetland walks. I suggest taking a walk around the Swiss-style village of Grindelwald, browsing the arts and craft studios that dot the region, and calling in on some of the vineyards and wineries that make up a significant part of the Tasmanian Wine Route. Don’t miss some of the spectacular winery restaurants. The views are magnificent, the food fresh, and the wines superb. Strathlynn and Rosevears Estate are both outstanding. Take time out to pick your own strawberries or raspberries from Hillwood Strawberry Farm. Visit the bi...Read More

This is different from most other places I have ever been. The architecture has been lifted straight from Switzerland. The resort actively encourages families and provides facilities to match. There is a Swiss-style village complete with chocolate shop, bakery and much more, all open to the public. The resort offers a choice of accommodation style. Most short-term visitors will opt for a hotel room Some have spa baths and some have balconies. There are also 25 self contained chalets with two bedrooms suitable for families of 4-6. The chalets have a separate living area and a fully equipped kitchen. We found the recreational facilities to be excellent. The indoor centre has a heated poo...Read More

Strathlynn is one of Tasmania’s most spectacular vineyard sites. It is close to the Tamar River and there are low mountain backdrops and 100 year-old tree avenues. It is a wonderful place to settle back with a glass of local wine and enjoy lunch or morning and afternoon tea. We drove through the vineyards to the central public area where there is a restaurant, gourmet food and wine gift shop, and wine tasting facilities. Wines from the well-known Pipers Brook vineyard, and Ninth Island wines and Vintage PIRIE are available. The day was bright and sunny and the scene was stunning. The restaurant and vineyard has panoramic views over the Tamar Valley. This is Tasmania’s major cool-clima...Read More

The spectacular winery, restaurant and vineyard development was only opened late 1999 but it has developed into one of the regions premier attractions. It is not difficult to see why. The position captures majestic views and the architectural design is stunning. Of course all that counts for little if the food and wine is not of a high quality. Fortunately both measure up well. The result is an outstanding experience. Rosevears wines are being accorded the recognition they deserve by authorities such as Gourmet Traveller magazine. In its 2002 restaurant guide the magazine recommended the 2000 Rosevears Riesling as being "full of lifted orange blossom aromas with hints of lime and lemon. The live...Read More

Tel: (03) 6394 8180; click here. This was a place we just stumbled upon so we didn’t really have time to do it justice. The main attraction would be the opportunity to pick fresh fruit for yourself straight of the bush. Strawberries, raspberries and other berry fruits are available in season (usually from November to May). You can pick as many as you wish and pay just A$7 per kilogram. No doubt you will have consumed some while you pick -–they’re free. If you have the time to stay there are picnic tables under shady trees and a huge steam train for the children (and I suspect many adults) to play on. The other main attraction ...Read More

One of Tasmania’s two organised wine routes travels through the Tamar Valley and Pipers Brook regions. There are prominent road signs indicating this route. Most travellers will be content to visit a handful of wineries and then look at some of the other attractions. If you feel this way, the following would be attractive. Moorilla Estate’s St Matthias vineyard (Tel: 6330 1700) is just a few hundred metres past Strathlynn. At the church-like cellar door we enjoyed the stunning views while sampling some wine with local cheese. Antipasto platters, desserts and plunger coffee are also available at this very attractive but low-key location. The wines were excellent. Tamar Ridge (Auburn Roa...Read More
