A March 2002 trip to Negril by Shmack

Quote: For most college students, Spring Break comes with sun, sand, and alcohol induced debauchery. We signed up for Jamaica looking forward to relaxing, serious tanning, and a taste of Jamaican culture. We stayed away from the big establishments because we wanted to patronize local businesses, and we weren't disappointed.

--> Jamaica taught me to appreciate the value of disregarding time. I was a little hesitant during my first two days, but it felt unnatural to be resisting. The locals carried an aura of non-commital, but deliberate attitudes. Coming from a time oriented place like New York City and arriving in a place where time had no meaning threw off my perception of time. As soon as I arrived in Jamaica, it felt like a time warp. Time no longer carried the weight that governed every single activity at home. My days in Jamaica were governed by motivation to see more, and to experience more. The characteristically laid-back, Jamaican attitude was infecting me. And if I all I wanted to was to lay out in t...Read More

OH, the FOOD!!! The food was the kicker. --> The food was amazing. Not so much vegetables, but the fruits! The coconut and the pineapple. Right on the beach, a woman with a large basket of fruit on her head pulls a huge cooler of cold drinks, coconut cookies, and cold fruit. Everyday, up and down the Seven Mile Beach, without fail. . . in heat, in drizzle (cuz it doesn't really rain). The coconut cookies are highly recommended, as are the baggies of pineapple. --> Avoid at all costs the pizza stand (I believe its called "Mr. Pizza") which serves the worst pizza I have ever had. Avoid Burger King (enough said), and avoid Margaritaville (overpriced). My motto when t...Read More

--> As mentioned in the overview, the laid back attitude of Jamaica was my biggest difficulty. Writing a travel journal on Jamaica is extremely challenging because a lot of opportunities are based on chance. For example, the proprietors of a day trip service (snorkelling, diving, parasailing, trips in land) don't have a specified location in which they do business. Instead, they will approach you on the beach, and offer their services. Don't pay more than US$35 for snorkeling and cliff jumping trips, and US$10 for parasailing. --> This is exactly how my friend and I booked our parasailing and snorkelling trip. It couldn't be more ideal: not having to move an inch to find out about act...Read More

-- For the most part, the debauchery that is associated with this island was brought by MTV, and his cohorts, the greeks. It is without a doubt that after getting liquored up, girls looking for their small screen debut will stare down from the stage at a handheld video camera. Jostling their way to the front, the video cameras aim to get the best angle, and the most skin. Various establishments will draw a line as how disgusting the action can get, but some just don't seem to care. If you want to stay away from these parties, or consequently, seek them out, you should be aware that Risky Business, Margaritaville, and Kuyaba can all get a little risque, but Coral Seas is by far the most. -- Stay...Read More
