Prince Edward Island

A June 1999 trip to Prince Edward Island by crystal

Quote: "PEI" is a wonderful getaway with cows in the pasture along the shore. Private beaches are always closeby - a wonderful place to watch the sunrise, pick blueberries, take a stroll, or a bikeride. For what seems like a remote place, there is plenty to do.

Prince Edward Island

Overview

Quote:
We noticed that a lot of the brochures (and even tour buses!) were written in English AND Japanese. It turns out that Japanese tourists flock to PEI - the home of Anne of Green Gables. We were told that Japanese students read that book in school and are big fans of it! We did a lot of driving around to discover places on our own and to find those listed in the tourist literature. I have listed our favorite activities in more detail. Quick Tips: Peruse the tourist literature for some very worthwhile coupons! (We got 1/2 off a ticket to the PEI College of Piping) Unless you are REALLY interested in potatos, the O'Leary Potato Museum really isn't worth the effort to dr...Read More

Hotel | "Parkview Farm Tourist Home and Cottages"

Quote:
This is an active dairy and beef farm, and guests are welcome to watch the cows being milked in the early morn'. We stayed in the B&B (inside the farmers house), but I would recommend getting a cottage (You would have more privacy and are very close to the beach.) The housewife will make you breakfast, but don't expect to have a full stomach! Cavendish is a great location to stay in. It is sort of smack in the middle of the island with plenty of activities close by.

We enjoyed our lunch of fish and chips and rhubarb lemonade. Rumor is that this place gets pretty crowded at night, and I think that they have bingo games at night too! Good food. Good Service. Definitely a tourist favorite. And the fiddlin' music sure is fun!

This is the 'Ben and Jerrys' of PEI with fun decor and Cows merchandise to boot! Various flavors of yummy ice cream. The Cows merchandise is a great PEI souvenir - lots of the images have PEI related themes!

There are lots of Lobster Supper houses on the island, but this is a popular one. They boast a 60 foot salad bar and yummy lobster dinners (I am a vegetarian and my boyfriend loves seafood, so it was great for us!). They also have tons of desserts. There is plenty to eat for everyone. A great place for couples or families!

College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada

Attraction | "The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts"

This is a great way to get out with the locals and learn about Scottish culture!! The students are among the top performers in Canada: Pipers, Fiddlers, Highland Dancers, and Step Dancers. Catherine McKinnon and Don Harron will crack you up with their performances (he tells Scottish jokes and she sings Scottish songs acting as if she were on Broadway or something!) This is one of our most memorable experiences from our vacation! (And very inexpensive!)
