Rothenburg - a nice medieval place

An April 2002 trip to Rothenburg by Rainy

This is the place that I will never forget. Travelling is just like a flow of water, one must go on and on, but this is definitely the place that I want to come back and back again!

Just walking around is a romantic experience as it is one of the stops on the Romantic Road in Germany. We joined a night walking tour there, very interesting... As you could know more about Rothenburg's history.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking is the best way to discover this little town. And the most important - no public transport is available within the city wall area!
When we just stepped out the train station, we found out that the tourist information was just so far away from the station! Without knowing any German, we felt so helpless! We looked around to find the accurate direction to the Marketplace (where the tourist information is!) But... luckily, an angel was coming! A 60-year-old lady approached us and asked whether we wanted to find a room. She showed us two thick guestbooks... many people have good comments in her accommodation. Without any hestitation, we got on her car... (I didn't want to walk around with so many luggages!)It's such a wonderful place... and remember, a royal breakfast is included! I felt like staying at home... and I always wanted to stay at her place and didn't want to go out! She taught us German, taught me how to make strawberry jam, and we're just like mother and daughter.

Her husband, Hans, is a nice gentleman. He didn't speak any English, but he always wanted to talk to us in German. It's a very funny experience when we tried to communicate with him. He gave us wine to drink, he drove us everywhere when he was available. He always smiled to show his kindness...

After staying for one night, I decided to go back here to celebrate my 23rd birthday. So, we went to Salzburg and then came back here again on my birthday... We stayed longer and longer, finally, we stayed for 4 nights and have to leave because we needed to continue our journey. We missed there so much so much!

Restaurant | "Lotus Resturant"

First of all, I want to tell you that I am a Chinese girl from Hong Kong. Most of the time, I think the chinese food elsewhere other than Hong Kong, China and Taiwan is really so... =(

However, we were always able to find a good Chinese restaurant in Germany. Lotus restaurant is definitely one of them. The waiter is very kind and helpful(although he is a German) Food is served very quickly and very delicious. I know many of you may like Chinese cuisine, go to have a try!

Lotus Restaurant
Near the City Wall Rothenburg, Germany

The Night Watchman of Rothenburg played an important role in the past times, he was responsible for the safety of the town. He carried a hellebarde, and held a light in the other hand. He appeared at night, this started the walking tour.

We joined this tour on mt 23rd birthday, a special day with a special event. The Night Watchman looked very smart, he was in black and many people liked taking pictures with him. Don't talk too loudly when he talked, because he would look very unhappy (or angry). Following him, we walked around this small city, and he talked much about the history of Rothenburg. Like... how rich this city was, and in the second world war, how this city was saved by an American general.

You would need to pay after the tour, many people just left before the very end of it. And of course, we did pay! = )

The Night Watchman of Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Daily from 8.00 pm. from Marketsquare Rothenburg, Germany

Hans and Karin, as introduced before, we stayed at their home for 4 nights! My birthday was 'happened' during the trip, therefore, I wanted to guarantee that we should have a good place to stay! I decided to go back to their home and had a nice rest before going on the trip. It's a very special experience to live in a German family. First, I enjoyed the 'fruhstuck' (breakfast) so much... there are sausages, different kinds of cheese, jams and her home-made jam, rolls, strawberries (very fresh and sweet), coffee and tea and orange juice. And as Karin told me, it would be a royal breakfast, so all the plates, bowls (for strawberries, for butter, etc. ) are so beautiful, and when I walked around Rothenburg, I found out that it's so expensive to buy a whole set!

Second, I felt like home. We watched television together, although we didn't know any German, Karin still wanted to discuss with us about the news.-- Hans, on the other hand, didn't know any English, but he wanted to communicate with us. So.. all of us used body language to communicate with each other. He treated us two glasses of white wine when we were about to leave. When they had lunch, they would let us try the food they cooked. They would do anything to let us know more about the German culture. When I said I wanted to make some strawberry jam, Karin taught me how to do, she bought the sugar for me in early morning and she let me take a bottle of her jam! (and she didn't let me pay for it!) Somehow, we created a relationship like friends or mother-and-daughter. We miss her, we miss Hans. Karin had an operation after we left, hope they will have good health.
