The best things about a trail ride through the mountains are too numerous to list, but I will try. Hearty home cooked meals, fresh mountain air, breathtaking scenery, clear mountain streams and waterfalls, bugling elk, clear skies, endless stars and making great friends. At every turn in the trail a new and more breathtaking vista seemed to come into view. Since this area does not allow wheeled vehicles the only other way to experience this would be on foot and believe me, riding a horse is a whole lot easier than hiking up to the tree line.Quick Tips: Although the horses are well seasoned and do all the work, it is best to have one or two riding lessons before you hit the trail. It is tough for me to review Eleanor's House since I want to say that I throughly enjoyed it, but I can't. There are many good things to say about this bed and breakfast, but I keep thinking about the price. Now I do have to keep in mind that this is Banff and Banff is expensive. Eleanor's was built to be a B&B and that being said it is very well appointed and laid out. There are five or six large bedrooms with sitting areas and ensuite bathrooms each with soaker tubs. Each room has a theme and can tend towards kitsch although most of it is done playfully. The room we had was a little over the top for us, being that it was a pink Victorian theme. The large parlour with a fireplace was wh...Read More

Although we were in Banff by default - it was the trailhead for our ride into the mountains -we throughly enjoyed our time there. By chance we stumbled upon Earl's (a real gem) as on our first night in Banff. From street level Earl's doesn't look like much, but when you climb the stairs you begin to realize that this could be very good. Earl's is the perfect mix of class and casual. The floor is small black and white tiles, the furniture is dark with white linen and the ceiling is high. This combination of openess and intimacy works perfectly. We had a seat by the window overlooking Banff Ave, if possible I would highly recommend this location. It was a great place to linger over ...Read More

A trailride through Banff National Park has to be one of the best ways to see the Rockies. The only other way to access these remote areas is hiking. And given the choice between carrying all my gear on my back or having a pack mule do it for me - I pick pack mule. On horseback you can cover more distance and yet still enjoy the scenery. I have to admit that riding into camp knowing that coffee was on the stove and supper was being prepared was an added bonus. If we had been hiking not only would we be exhausted by hiking up the trails but we would have had to make camp and exist on freeze dried trail food, not roast beef, onion soup, bbq chicken, pie, etc. The other benefit of riding vs hi...Read More

To celebrate our 40th birthdays my partner and I took a five day trail ride in Banff National Park. This was a trip that I had imagined for my whole life. Growing up on a farm I always had a pony and imagined crossing the country on horseback. At the age of forty, spending five days in the mountains was a dream come true. Warner Guiding and Outfitting (click here)have over 30 years of experience guiding in Banff. They are able to create an experience that is both exhilerating and comforting. Although you are in back country where no wheeled vehicles are allowed and where all that separates you at night from bears is a solar powered electric fence, ...Read More
