Nepal. Kakarbitta - the road to Janakpur

A December 2000 trip to Kakarbhitta by cosmic chris

The border towns between India and Nepal are generally pretty rugged but this place takes the cake. The town has a large bus station and lots of poor hotels. But it is a perfect staging post if you want to break up the travelling. Its also the jumping off point if you're travelling to the Terai area of Nepal.

Getting out of the jeep was a real boost for the posterior. The whole traveling experience in India/Nepal is about battering the buttocks. The views of the Nepali countryside are something to behold. Stopping along the way in small towns gives an insight into the lives of rural Nepali folk.

Quick Tips:

Stay clear of the bus station when locating a hotel. It gets very noisy when a bus is due to leave, whether this is during the night or not.

It is essential to see any room before booking in and parting with cash. Be prepared to visit a few hotels to find a decent(ish) bed for the night.

Best Way To Get Around:

Kakarbitta is small enought to walk around. There are rickshaws available but the roads are so uneven that it's better to walk.

Hiring a self drive vehicle wasn't possible at the time, but it is possible to hire a vehicle with a driver!
