The shopping is a delight as well. There are your typical coastal swimshops selling suits too small for your Barbie doll, but keep looking. Antique shops harbour the booty the wreckers.
The lore! There is a number of venues from which to learn of Key West's rich past. As for the Popular House, this late nineteenth century Victorian mansion (circa 1898)was built by wrecker William Russell as sugar for his wife. Unimpressed, she left him none-the-less. Well, I could have stayed forever.
Quick Tips:
Do not stay at your brand name resort hotels. Though an attempt at authenticity is made, the quaint charm and personal touch, as offered at the Popular House, is missed. Get into the culture. Indulge from the inside out.Best Way To Get Around:
By all means rent a bike! The island is large enough that if you don't, your little feeties will soon beg for reprieve. Outside of arrival and departure, a car is a nuesance on the crowded, narrow streets of Paradise. Read Less
