Italy in May - Venice

Overview

You absolutely have to visit San Marco cathedral, Doge's palace, Museum Correr, Galleria Academia, Peggy Guggenheim collection, Ca' Rezonnico and Ca' d'Oro. These are really a must on your first trip.Quick Tips: For Venice you don't need any reservations. In the beginning of May there were some lines, but they were moving quickly and you didn't have t wait more than 15 minutes to get in anywhere. The cheaper places to grab a lunch are around the Rialto bridge, here the prices are comparable to smaller towns. San Marco square has the most expensive shops and restaurants. All I could do was window-shopping. Murano glass is everywhere and is quite expensive, they will also ship it for you ...Read More

Located on the most fashionable street in Venice (kind of like Promenade des Anglais in Nice), this hotel used to be a Palace and became a hotel in 1822. It is located 2 minuters away from San Marco square. The building has a prominent red color and right in front of it is the vaporetto station "San Zaccharia". The hotel still has antique furniture in the lobby and on the floors, antique carpets and wall coverings. It has a really beautiful staircase and the view from the restaurant terrace on the roof is really great. Now for the rooms. The rooms are rather small and the bathrooms are very small. The bathtub is so narrow that it seems it was built for a child. In the beginning of ...Read More

Phone: (041) 522 49 51 Open: Apr-Oct 9 am -7 pm daily, Nov-March 9am – 5 pm daily. Combined entry ticket cost 9.5 euros When you buy a ticket, it allows you entry in Doge’s Palace, Museum Correr, Archeological museum and the library. It is a combined ticket and I recommend that you visit all of the museums. So let’s start with Doge’s Palace. Located literally right next door to San Marco Cathedral, this building doesn’t look very large from the outside, but only when you go through all the halls with painted ceilings and walls, Senate rooms, look at the size of each of these halls and what each doge tried to bring with him, you realize the enormity of all of this. The ...Read More

Phone: (041) 522 26 37 Open: 9 am – 6 pm Mon-Sat, 3 pm – 6 pm Sun This church has very plain look from the outside, the façade is made of brick and it doesn’t have much decoration. But it is one of the major sights in Venice. The entrance is to the side and when you enter, you are very much impressed by the numerous chapels, most with paintings by Titian, but even more than that this is the place of burial of Canova and Titian. Canova wanted to build a monument to Titian and he designed the marble pyramid in neo-classical style. But he died before he could implement it. So his pupils built a different monument to Titian which is grand and looks like one of the antique arcs with lots of ...Read More

Phone: (041) 522 55 58 Open: 9 am – noon, 3 pm – 5:30 pm daily This church was started in 1630 for the city recovery from plague and is called Salute because of that, since Salute means health, salvation. It took its architect, Baldassare Longhena, all his life to build it and it was finished in 1687, 5 years after his death. This is a very large Baroque church built at a great location where Grand Canal merges with St. Mark’s Basin. The church really shocks you with its size and grandeur but also with how light and bright everything is inspite of its size. It has magnificent floor patterns and a huge altar. The best thing about it are its chapels that have major paintings by Titi...Read More
