A Week in Lyme, N.H.

Overview

Quote:
It's always a thrill to stay an old stage coach Inn, converted to a B&B and to visit a typical beautiful New England College. One can take pleasant walks in the country side and eat in out of the way restaurants. In May the greenery just starts to emerge and the air smells so fresh.

Quick Tips:

Don't stay in these fancy modern hotels and motels when you can enjoy old fashioned service and friendly atmosphere in these out of the way Inns.

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving and walking are about the only reasonable ways to get around

We settled into a pleasant and relatively large room with a queen size bed, easy chair and attached bathroom. The room had three windows to give it much light and air -- which was needed because we came during an unusual early heat wave.

We were on the second floor, along a hallway filled with many antiques. The Inn is located near the church, and the bells are pleasant to listen to. The Inn has a very good dining room and a bar.

The dining room of the Inn is on the street floor and there is a little traffic from locals who come to eat, mostly however, the hotel guests eat here. The place is quiet, the service is fast, friendly and the food is excellent. We had sliced duck breast on Himalayan red rice which turned out to be unusually good and was the latter was new to us. The beer was cold and the desert looked good but we were too full to partake.

We were driving through eastern Vermont, close to Hanover N.H. when we came through Norwich and spotted this nice little restaurant. We stopped, looked over the menu and made reservations right there and then. Since Norwich is only about ten minutes drive from Hanover and that in turn is about ten minutes from Lyme, it was an easy ride in the evening to get to the restaurant. There were only a few guests because of the early hours we tend to eat dinner, so we had a chance to speak with the proprietor. This was a very friendly young man who told us they had been open for about twelve years. The place has several different rooms, all very nicely furnished abd comfortable to sit in. The food turned out t...Read More

Dartmouth, one of the seven Ivy League Colleges, sits in the Center of Hanover and clearly it and it's excellent faculty and student body dominates the town. Some of the buildings go back nearly 200 years, while many new and very attractive buildings house not only lecture halls but the laboratories and the fine museum right in the center. The medical school is only a two minute drive away and the renowned Hitchcock Medical Center is also but a few minutes drive away.

Abutting the green is the Hanover Inn, an elegant structure with excellent accomodations. It's restaurant is heavily used and serves excellent american style food.
