Overview

Quote:
With over 300 square miles, the Hortobagy National Park is a rather large chunk of land. It may be quite flat and seemingly barren, but the plains of the pustza have a number of interesting highlights to check out. Certainly visiting the animals in the Hortobagy National Park's demonstration area is of interest to all animal lovers, and the Lake Tisza region is great for both ecofriendly tourism and outdoor recreation enthusiasts.Quick Tips: While you are in the area it is certainly worth making a stopn in the nearby city of Debrecen. It's the second largest city in Hungary and has a nice atmosphere that is considerably di...Read More

An excellent four star hotel out in the middle of nowhere, the Hortobagy Club Hotel is popular with business travellers looking for a conference facility where they can get away from it all. The high end luxury hotel seems somewhat at odds with the flat plains of the puszta, but why shouldn't folks be able to follow up a dusty afternoon of cattle herding with a spa treatment?Originally designed as a hotel that would draw horse riding families the Hortobagy Club Hotel has a number of cottages that suround the large main building, each with its own riding stable. You can bring along your own horse or rent one for the duration of your stay.Since there aren't so many horse fans willing to Hort...Read More

The restaurant inside the Hotel Hableary (or Mermaid Hotel) is situated next to the Tisza River, with views of the water below. This area is part of the Tisza-to Natioanl Park, and a number of wild birds can be spotted in the area. Nearby is an entrance to the great Lake Tisza, making the hotel an ideal destination for multiple days out on the water.Focusing on the restaurant, we were served a szaraz, or Puszta cocktail, consisting of Tokaj wine, apricot brandy and herbs. It's a very strong and heady drink that had most of our group dizzy before we even began the meal.Smoked eel was served with a light horseradish cream, and was surprisingly good. I had only tried eel once before and had...Read More

Lake Tisza

Attraction

Quote:
The immense Lake Tisza is not a naturally formed body of water. By temporarily damming up the Tisza River a few decades ago the Hungarians were able to create a large lake in the Great Plains area. It serves multiple purposes, including new recreation areas for humans and protective habitats for plants and fauna. The area we visited was in Tiszafured, where the roadway of Route 33 crosses over the expanse of Lake Tisza. A number of recreational activities are based around this area, but it's also nearby the protected bird reserve making it a great departure point for bird watching. Herons, egrets, spoonbills, falcolns and even eagles can be sighted along the shore or flying high above. Boat ren...Read More

The Pasztormuzeum, or Herdsman's Museum, offers a number of displays that illustrate the lives of the men and women who settled in the lonely plains of the puszta. Once a rich agrcultural area, the land became barren and empty in the 17th century as a result of deforestation and conquering tribes not tending the earth. The flat plains became ideal for raisng animals that graze, and some tough pioneers came out to the pustza to live and work the difficult life of a herdsman. On display in the museum are traditional costumes worn by the various types of herders (cattle, horse, sheep, gota, pig), instruments that they used in caring for the animals, the teepee like huts they built to keep warm on the...Read More

The Hortobagyi Nemzeti Park is humongous, a national park that consists of over 80,000 hectacres of land. Much of it is flat plains land, and may not seem an ideal destination for a vacation. But the unique environment truly offers the vistor a chance to "get away from it all," and is paradise for hore riding fans. The area I visited in the Hortobagyi Nemzeti Park has display areas that showcase the animals that are raised out on the putzsa. We took a horse drawn wagon out into the wide open plains, where we visited horned goats and cattle herds that were being shepherded by small barking dogs. The highlight was having the opportunity to watch a brief show with two horses and then being allowed t...Read More
