Fort Worth Local Recommendations

Tips and recommendations from a local

  • 10 reviews
Visit the Stockyards, Grapevine Mills Mall, Six Flags Over Texas, the Kimball Art Museum, catch the Dallas Ballet, and visit Deep Ellum. Also, you should definitely make time for the Fort Worth Water Gardens.

Quick Tips:

If you're planning on visiting both Dallas and Fort Worth, stay near DFW Airport. This gives you best access to both cities. Check for special events at Will Rogers Auditorium in Fort Worth, and avoid traveling between the two cities at 5:00 on weekdays.

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving is your best bet; public transportation is improving, but not awesome. You'll want to park and walk in downtown Dallas or Deep Ellum, but most other areas require that you have transportation of some sort. Taxis will be hard to find outside of the airport and downtown area; you'll have to call for them.

Saviano's RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Saviano's Italian Restaurant"

Reservations are only needed for a large group. This is a slightly-larger-than-hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurant, and both the service and food are excellent. Although they have table space for groups of ten to twenty, there are more private tables for two as well. The low lights and decor combine to make a fairly romantic, though inexpensive, dinner or lunch.

If you're going to visit Six Flags, your best bet is to go in the middle of the week and right when they open in the morning. Hit the newest rides early in the morning, then break for one of the shows. Lunch is expensive and the restaurant isn't always clean, with the volume of people. I suggest bringing a cooler and eating in the parking lot. Wear sunscreen -- you'll get burned waiting in line. Keep in mind, there's little 'local culture' here. If you're an amusement park fan, it's worth the visit. Otherwise, hit the Water Gardens.

This is a beautiful piece of architecture in the middle of the office buildings and historical buildings of downtown. There are numerous fountains, pyramid-style plazas, and miniature forests. It's very tranquil and despite being less than a mile from the Interstate, you can actually look around in some parts of the Water Gardens and see none of the surrounding city. One caution: You should visit during the day. This is not one of the best areas of town to be in at night.

Although I don't normally consider a mall a tourist attraction, this one is worth the visit. (Particularly if you're not used to being out in the Texas heat all day.) The mall itself is huge, with many non-franchise stores. The attached movie theatre is all stadium-seating and state of the art sound, and the Polar Ice skating rink has two sheets of ice and skate rental. There's also the Rain Forest Cafe and Gameworks, very large, interactive restaurants and arcades.

Dave & BustersBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Dave N Busters"

This is a grown-up's playground and restaurant. You can play pool, table shuffleboard, and they often have card games. There's also a huge arcarde with many VR and interactive games, play against your friends, hit golf balls in the driver game, shoot baskets for carnival tickets. The restaurant has some upscale style entrees, and they have private rooms where activities like murder mystery parties are sometimes hosted.

Fort Worth ZooBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

I'm a pretty avid zoo-goer,and this is one of my favorite. It's easy to get to (south of I-30 in Fort Worth), a good price, and there are a lot of displays. The habitats are set up so that the majority of the animals will be visible, and it's easy walking around the area. There's also ample shade, and the zoo overall is a nice, clean place. I particularly like the Insect City display.

Dallas ZooBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

The Dallas Zoo is decent, but I tend to prefer the Fort Worth Zoo. A couple of specific reasons: The Dallas Zoo has a lot more inclines, which makes the walk more tiresome (especially with strollers). Also, Dallas Zoo seems to have a lot less exhibits (I haven't counted and don't know for sure.). The petting zoo portion is very well done, and the zoo does have some nice exhibits.

Fry's ElectronicsBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

There are only 17 Fry's stores in the country, and two are in Dallas/Fort Worth -- I think it's a must-see for computer geeks and electronics buffs. The store is enormous. They carry items from computer bundles, printers, scanners, down to circuit boards, resistors, and oscilloscopes. I almost bought a 16' telescope there one weekend. If you're into computers or electronics, it's worth a visit while you're in the area.

Trader's Village RV Flea Market Park & Camp GroundBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Trader's Village"

Only open on the weekends, and it costs $2 to park. Trader's Village is like sidewalk sales -- there are carnival rides, you can pet the world's smallest pony and munch on a turkey leg all at the same time. The stores range from new furniture to car bumpers to books to clothing to luggage to pets to an Atari 2600. There's a ton of schlock, a lot of great deals, and just a few, really rare finds. A lot of the merchandise looks like it came from a garage sale, while a lot of it is new from the manufacturer. You'll also find a Farmer's Market inside that includes a lot of traditional Mexican foods.
