Rome in August

Posted by ron drews on August 13, 2009

I'll be in Rome the last week of Aug which is their vacation month.
Should I enjoy an empty Rome with no lines etc or should I get a car and take in some additional Italy?

If you have a week, definitely venture out some. You don't need a car, just hop on a train to the beach or something. You'll get the authentic Italians there. August was a great time to visit Rome and it gets a bad publicity. We did not have any line problems and actually had St Peter's square almost to ourselves at one point. It is a good time to go if you want to see the sights. Otherwise, culturally speaking, make sure you get out of the city for a couple days as well and meet some people! Go to my blog if and when you have a chance!

I think you could easily fill up a whole week just in Rome. There are so many amazing things to see. However, this depends a little on your personality... how deep you want to dig into the sights, how long you linger in places, how far off the beaten path you go in Rome itself. That said, it would be great if you had an overnight outside of Rome as well because it will be a different experience... a different taste of Italy. If you drive in Italy---especially in Rome---be prepared to get a drink afterwards!
