Trip Suggestions?

Posted by LauraJeff on March 06, 2011

We are heading back to Maui later this year, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on places to eat (local places, not super tourist-y), and if there were any tips on places to visit things to do, etc. We've already taken the road to Hana, which we loved, and we've gone on a snorkeling trip (we went on a 5 hour excursion with mauiboattrips and it was so great we plan on booking with them again). We have also done the whole Luau thing. We were only there for 4 days last time, and this visit we plan on staying 10 days so we will have much more time. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks much!

If you don't have a set hotel, there's a little yurt near Hana that's great. It's called the Luana Spa Retreat. Owner's super nice, it's got great views of the ocean, and it's really a unique place to stay. Plan to buy food and cook, though, because there's not much in the way of restaurants around here.

I highly recommend driving up the crater in the middle of the island. Unfortunately, when we went it was really foggy, but even the drive itself was really cool (it's not for the weak-hearted).

I don't recommend the NW portion of Maui. Expensive, commercialized, touristy. It doesn't sound like the type of experience you're going for.

I don't think we had any amazing restaurant experiences on Maui. But I remember in Oahu that our best meals came from those small, dinky-looking places that had a take-out window and a few picnic tables.

I have a ton of suggestions, having been there more times than I can count. There's some private, secret beaches, lots to do Upcountry, the winery, lava fields out past Makena, surf lessons.....I could go on and on. Give me specifics, and I'll do my best for you. You can read my blog for more ideas. I'm heading over in two weeks, maybe I can come up with more for you!

Aloha, Lonee
