I had been to Australia once and explored Queensland. There I enjoyed diving into the Great Barrier Reef, un-spoilt beaches etc.

My husband and I are off to Australia this October and we'd like to know which
tour company members recommend for touring/sailing around the Great Barrier Reef. I'm avidly reading journals.

I'm in Sydney - RIGHT NOW. Just back from a few days on the GBR out of Cairns with another 5 days to go before we fly home. Even in the middle of their winter it's not at all bad (by British standards!)

If you're limited on time, the top 4 places to visit are Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and North Queensland (e.g. the Great Barrier reef).

Sydney and Melbourne will give you a taste of the city life in Australia. I'd spend more time in Sydney as it has the key attractions Australia is famous for - e.g. the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. The beaches are also beautiful. Melbourne is a nice place to visit as it's a city with a more 'European' feel than Sydney and has lots of hidden bars that you often can't find in Sydney.

The Gold Coast is very touristy but it's where you'll find great long stretches of pristine beaches, and is a popular spot for going out among both tourists and locals. You should go to North Queensland, e.g. the Whitsunday Islands or Cairns to see the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest; two famous natural wonders in Australia.

If you're looking to save money while travelling, check out eatability.com.au for restaurant specials and reviews. There's also a new site - shoestringer.com - that aggregates specials and shows you what the local pubs and bars have for happy hour.

Hope that helps :)

I agree that if you want to experience Australia in a short trip then you need to include Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and North Queensland ( Barrier Reef)

I used to live in Sydney and my one recommendation is that you avoid staying in a city based hotel as you will miss out on absorbing the inner city and beach enclaves, I would consider staying in a holiday apartment in Bondi Beach so that you can soak up the salt air and the beach side community.

I have had friends recommend this place called Tama Beach House www.tamabeach.com ( its a holiday rental accommodation place in Bondi / Tamarama )

Australia is such a beautiful country that I am sure that you will want to return to see more
