There's a lot of stuff going on there soon. SXSW is in March and I believe the Austin City Limits music festival is happening soon.
As for places to stay I'm actually in the same boat. I did get suggested a site called http://www.metroflats.com by a friend, but other than that I got nothing. I would check that site out, though, it looks pretty promising.
