From Working the "Day Shift" on Cable Beach

Whether enjoying undulating vistas from its white-sand beaches or snorkeling through tranquil blue waters teeming with exotic sea life, a trip to Nassau always makes for a relaxing day. Best yet, because of its close proximity to the States, I can wake up in my chilly New York apartment, head to the airport, and within a few hours, be stretched out on a deck chair. And if I have obligations the next day, I can be back in my apartment by 10:30pm that night.

Once you've "parked," the rest of this Bahamas jewel comes right to you, whether it's hotel staff with food and drinks, beach vendors offering jet ski and parasailing excursions, or friendly locals selling their handicrafts and services. You'll see all types selling all kinds of things, but you'll definitely want to meet "George," a local who's been working the Cable Beach area for years; you'll see him with a sizeable bucket of coconuts balanced atop his head. For US$3, he'll whack off one of the tops, pour the milk into another potent concoction, then refill the shell with ice and a straw.

Snorkeling is readily available, but unless you plan on taking one of the larger excursions that take you out to deep waters, leave the flippers at home. You can walk forever in the shallow waters along the shore, needing nothing more than your mask and a tube. Just be aware that all of that "bent over" exposure to your back can get you roasted fairly quickly.

Other water activities in the area include wave runners, parasailing, fishing runs, and glass-bottomed boat rides. As you might expect, prices vary based on who you're dealing with and your willingness to play the bargaining game. On a previous trip with friends, three of us decided to try parasailing and got a group rate discount of $50 each for a 15-minute ride. We were shuttled from the beach to a floating dock out in the bay, where we harnessed up and took off. For this, my first and only attempt at the sport, I couldn't imagine a better place to have done it than in the Bahamas! The beautiful turquoise waters and white sandbars were beyond description.

Parasailing was an experience I'll never forget. Your mouth will be wide open with excitement, but don't gasp for air. There's something about the thick, salty air, coupled with the thrill of being in the Bahamas, that can all but take your breath away.
