By Go Girl!
I dreamt of sleeping in a stateroom the size of a New York studio, leisurely walking the lush gardens and living the life of an English aristocrat. As my taxi approached Thorsby Hall in Nottinghamshire, I waited to catch a glimpse of magnificent gardens and an ornate Elizabethan mansion.
No mansion appeared. Instead, a rather modern structure came into view. I scratched my head in confusion, wondering if my taxi driver heard me correctly. He quickly pointed to a sign indicating we were indeed at Thorsby Hall. In the distance, I caught a glimpse of an extravagant stately home.
Thorsby Hall was everything I thought it would be: elegant, sophisticated and timeless. The large dining room, where one has the same table and waiter for the duration of their stay, was an exact replica of a cruise ship dining room. The cabaret-style entertainment venue, with its nightly lineup of comedy, jazz and line dancing, seemed more fitting for a Las Vegas casino than a 16th century mansion. The exquisite Blue Room Restaurant inspired a sense of formality, while the large billiard room and library offered grandiose comfort.
Bath was a convenient day trip from the hotel and I found it still very much as Jane Austen must have known it, with charming cobblestone streets, beautiful buildings and the elegant townscapes she so brilliantly portrays in her novels. I had a spectacular lunch at The Hole in the Wall restaurant, an upscale basement retreat serving modern British cuisine, and reluctantly left Bath, dreaming of returning in late 2002 when Bath opens the only natural thermal spa in Britain. After visiting York, Bath and Burford, where I saw Chatsworth House, Warwick Castle and Stonehenge, I was ready to discover more of England.
I traveled to the south and arrived at another Warner property called Littlecote House. Littlecote boasts a beguiling past, a colorful butler and a convenient location close to some of the most amazing sights in England. This intriguing hotel is also filled with ghost stories and local history.
