Sharkey’s theme is all in the name. If you like turquoise, you will love this place. Gigantic cartoon sharks are painted on the walls here, surrounded by a sea of blue. Sharkey’s is a great location for a couple of reasons. It combines many of the finer points of the other downtown bars into one location. First of all, there is no cover to get in. There are two floors to Sharkey’s. The downstairs is great for grabbing a table and talking with friends. The noise is not overbearing on this level. The food is also well above average for bar food, and food can be ordered on the first floor until late at night. Don’t miss the sweet potato fries. They are a favorite. Sharkey’s is also known for its many varieties of wings, one so spicy that it makes chicken wing veterans cry. There are two pool tables in a room off the back of this level that are on the quieter side and great for a group of people hanging out together. Come early and claim this area to have this section to yourselves all night.
The upstairs has many pool tables and a bar. The wait for a table will not be long. The tables are coin-operated here and the challenger pays. If you are good, you can play all night for under a dollar. The upstairs will be more crowded, but it never gets so crowded that it feels cramped. Drinks are relatively inexpensive, and they serve some of the better quality mixed drinks and shots in the area. Every day from 2 to 9pm there is a $0.99 mixed drink special. A good mix of undergrads and graduate students frequent Sharkey’s. If you want to plant yourself at one bar for the entire evening, Sharkey’s would be a good choice.
