Description: The Lewes Arms is an old pub near the centre of the town, small and attractive. The outside is pretty, with impressive hanging baskets and window boxes. It’s situated at the corner of several small streets, near the castle, and is a great place to stop off on the way to or from it. Inside the decoration is typically pub-like, with oak tables and comfortable chairs and benches around them. There are also stools at the bar for those who only feel comfortable drinking half standing-up! The walls are decorated with posters about the town and about the theatre, an interesting combination. I’ve stopped in here for a half-hour to relax a couple of times when I’ve been to the town on business, and recently also went there for lunch. The pub has an impressive collection of different types of beer for customers to choose from, and a guest beer on offer at any one time, from a local brewery. The bar prices are reasonable, certainly cheaper than London.
The food is good, solid, pub fare. There’s a good choice of sandwiches (baguettes or normal bread) jacket potatoes, fresh soup of various kinds served with a bread roll, a couple of pasta dishes and a ploughman’s lunch. For the uninitiated, this is a meal of salad, fresh crusty bread, and a few different types of cheese – a lovely meal, especially in the summer.
The pub is smoking throughout (most pubs in England are) and is also a mobile phone free zone – a notice by the bar states that using a mobile means you buy the whole pub a drink…..
