Rick's Cafe

Rick's Cafe is one of the most popular attractions in Negril. That, combined with the fact that our resort offered a very inexpensive bus to the location, drove us there. I was decently unimpressed with the service and food. Since we had just consumed dinner at the resort, we planned on having a drink or two, and also dessert here. As soon as our waitress found out we were only eating dessert, she became immediately rude. She ignored us several times, and it took us over an HOUR to get our bill from her once we finished dining. We ended up having to request the bill from another server. And I found the dessert quality to be a bit poor and lacked in variety for selection. As usual with tourist destinations, the food was overpriced. It was worth seeing once, however, as the cliff diving is exciting to watch (or try, if you're brave enough). They also have a guy there that jumps from an overhung tree— amazing!!! While we were there, they had a local reggae band (poor, at best) playing during sunset. Personally, I would not go there again, but I am glad I went once.

Rick's Cafe

Famous for being battered during the hurricane of 2004, my friend was elated when I told her that we visited Rick's Cafe and that it looked like it had forgotten about the damage the hurricane caused.

Rick's is spacious and sits on the cliff, just like almost everything else in the West End of Negril. Jamaican locals climb the trees and dive off the cliffs to show off to the tourists and earn some change. The sunset views are superb; match that with the live reggae music, and you have a completely chill Jamaican night.

I went to the bar to order a drink and requested the bartender's specialty drink. Was I surprised when he offered me a fruit punch he surely just named right there and then? My Sex with Rick cocktail was strong enough to clear my sinuses. Of course, the true Jamaican way is to chase down any liquor with Red Stripe, and that's exactly what we did.

In no time at all, we were dancing on the sand to Bob Marley's Red, Red Wine.

You cannot visit Negril without visiting Rick's Cafe, considered one of the ten best pubs/bars in the Caribbean or in the world (as they claim). The sunset views are truly out of this world, and the cliffs are steep. They have areas dug out of the cliffs that people sometimes use to dive. However, I did observe signs stating that all divers do so at their own risk and they recommend professional divers only use the diving spot. I learned from reading a biography on the wall on the lefthand side just past the entrance that Rick's Cafe was and is still owned by a medical doctor (the son of the former Governor General of Jamaica). The biography also talks about the renovations that had to be made to the premises after a hurricane passed through some four or five years ago.

The bar itself is nothing much to cry home about. It is the stunning cliff views and sunset views that make Rick's Cafe what it is, a premier spot in the Caribbean. Rick's Cafe is in the west end of Negril and is a good distance from the beach area, so be prepared to take a route taxi (JA 200, ie $4) to get there.

Cliff Diving

Initially, my friend and I went up to Rick's Cafe to catch the sunset, and were amused by the kids who decided they would emulate the locals by jumping off the rather high cliffs into the ocean. After a few minutes and three pina coladas, however, the ides of jumping the cliff seemed to make perfect sense.

We were told that the high cliff was over a hundred feet above the water, and standing on its edge it was easy enough to believe. In hindsight, however, it probably is not such an extreme drop. Crashing into the water feet first hurt a little and my swim trunks almost came off from the force of hitting the water, but it was all over in two or three seconds.

There is a smaller cliff below to practice your style and steel your nerves. The bar next door to the cliffs is convenient for having your friends fork over congratulatory drinks on your foolhardy accomplishment.

Rick's Cafe

This popular tourist destination is a happening outdoor patio bar that draws the crowds in with the promise of the most amazing sunset they will ever witness. And indeed the blazing sun looked like it would melt right into the water after flooding the skies with red and orange light.

The crowd was fun and appreciative of the beautiful sight. Fairly young and partying compared to other places we had checked out in Jamaica, Rick's Cafe is a great place to meet new folks and knock back a few expensive drinks. It's also where you can catch the crazy folks diving off the nearby cliffs, or dive off yourself if so inclined.
