Shaw Festival

All the shows at the festival for the last 6 years have been amazing. My husband won't let me do anything else for his birthday since I took him in 1999. There are shows every day, and you can get tickets for $30 for folks under 30, or there are lots of discounts for groups, weekday shows, and other matinees.

There are a lot of hotel packages as well that can make this an affordable night away, or if you live in the area, it is a doable day trip. The wineries nearby are a great place to visit for lunch or dinner. There is not a bad seat in the house.

The theatre is top-notch. You will find plays by various playwrights including George Bernard Shaw, but not exclusively.

The 2002 lineup included: Caesar and Cleopatra, Detective Story, Candida, Hay Fever, and more.

We saw "The Return of the Prodigal", written by St John Hankin in 1905. It had a definite feel of Oscar Wilde (and in fact, before I read the programme I thought it was a Wilde play). The acting was superb, and set-changes flawless. The one thing we felt was that it was missing an act...it seemed to end before it should have.

The Courthouse Theatre is just that, a theatre in the old courthouse. It is rather small, but that means that there isn't a bad seat in the house; you can hear everything perfectly from the first row or the last.

The Shaw Festival is the second-largest reperatory company in North America, and the only theatre in the world that specializes in plays by Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries (1856-1950) - plays about the beginning of the modern world.

The Festival runs from April to November each year in three different theatres. Up to a dozen shows are run in The Festival each year.
