Byre Theatre

This theatre used to be one of the smallest professional theatres in the country, but thanks to a huge grant investment, a new modern facility was rebuilt on the old site. The Theatre although bigger - still isn't a huge affair and probably seats about 300 so pre-booking is essential. They have their own performing company but also play host to a range of touring acts including occasional films. During the summer they take on Sunday afternoon bands which generally play Jazz or blues music - great way to spend what is otherwise a very quiet day in the town.

The theatre is hidden away behind the buildings on Abbey Street - up towards the cathedral - but St Andrews is so small that everyone knows its location. Failing that, look out for the black signposts on the street which point to all the various tourist attractions. One word of warning - if you are using public transport check the finishing times of teh productions as the last northbound bus leaves the town at 10:30pm, the Byre tends to start many of their productions at 8pm - I was almost caught out the other week.
