Brettos

Our favorite Athens night spot was a narrow distillery and bar in the Plaka called Brettos. We met new friends there from as far away as Iraq, and loved the atmosphere, both low-key (house kittens) and attractive (a wall of lighted bottles). The staff were friendly and there was a nice amount of people, with seats still open for us. Locals mixed easily with those just passing through. The drinks, particularly ouzo and Greek wines, were excellent. You can also buy bottles to take home.

Brettos

Brettos (pronounced "vrettos") is a very charming place to come in, sit and have one of the best ouzo or brandy available in Greece. The first thing you notice when passing by or coming inside is his beautiful decor of coloured bottles that are lit from the bottom, providing a colour spectrum in contrast to the 200 year old building. The specialty is the ouzo or bandy which is made on premises and conditioned in the old oak casks that line the walls in the pub. I asked the owner about this and he explained the casks were near 100 years old and was one of the factors in the smoothness his ouzo and brandy offers. Try the VSOP can only be bought in the bottle, but the 3- and 5-star can be poured directly from the casks and are fantastic in their own right. The real treasure here is the ouzo. Very smooth and full bodied, this ouzo is the best I have tried and many of the locals echo the same opinion. The owner will pour a glass straight from the cask or you can take some home and impress your friends with your delicious find.

Also, they serve wine, beers, and other spirits if you are so inclined. He has a small but very nice selection of liquors and wines by the bottle if you are in need of something to go or take home.

Tip: Spend an hour here, try the ouzo, and become involved in the conversations that are easy to be included on as the locals and travelers alike are a friendly mix and make for a comfortable environment.

I almost hate to call this a bar, it is so much more. Bretto's is the oldest distillery in Athens. The first thing you notice is the wall full of colored bottles that fill the entire back wall floor to ceiling. On another wall are the old barrels full of spirits that are still used. Bretto's has about 10 stools where you can sample his famous ouzo (very smooth) or brandy. If you want a good mild tasting ouzo, try his -- it is not available in any of the liquor or grocery stores. He sells various sized bottles of both his ouzo and his 3, 5 or 7 star, 35-year-old VSOP brandy. The ouzo can be bought in a great aluminum canister that is almost impossible to break, making ir great for airline travel. It is surprisingly light we brought home six of these LARGE canisters and they were very manageable in our carry-on. The brandy is great too!

My husband really enjoyed hanging out here speaking with locals and tourists alike. He was really just avoiding shopping with the kids and I, although we did bring home plenty of "souvenirs" from Bretto's. One option available here is shipping home a whole case. You can mix and match, and although the cost is rather significant, it's easier than carrying a case with you through an airport and on the plane. Be sure to visit Bretto's, have a drink, buy a metal cannister (or six) or a bottle of his excellent brandy, and say hi to him for me!

Brettos

Right in the heart of the Plaka, on one of the main streets, there is a small bar and liquor store. Brettos is nice to have a few drinks after a good meal, just before you go to sleep. This very old-fashioned bar has beautifully lit bottles on the back wall, huge old barrels on one side and a prime choice of liquors from all over the world on the other. But when in Greece, do as the Greeks do: order Ouzo. The home brand is excellent. So much so that I didn't find a better one during the following week while travelling across the Peleponnese. Visited by many locals, it is also very inviting for the tourists. Open until one o' clock, it's a perfect old place for a nightcap.
