Before going to Toronto, I searched the internet to see if there were any shows that we could see whilst we were there. I found out from another review on IgoUgo that Mamma Mia was once in town, so I did a search to find out if it was still showing. I eventually found out that it was still going strong at the Alexandra Theatre, but the prices I found were very high -- CS$200 and up per person. After nearly giving up, I came across a site called TicketKing.com, which was offering tickets for CD$84 per person for a first balcony seat. In fact, you could choose the seat you wanted and it priced this accordingly – I booked it.
It has to be said that my husband was not overly enthusiastic about going to the theatre to see Mamma Mia, but once booked he had no choice.
We were able to walk to the theatre from out hotel and found that it was a small, very attractive theatre. We found our seats and waited for the performance.
For anyone who has not already seen Mamma Mia, I will not give too much away, other than to say the story line of a young British girl about to get married in her home town in Greece seeks to find her father from three possible candidates, does not give justice to the musical. It is in fact a great show with many very funny moments and lots of Abba songs, which seem to have been written for the performance, rather than the other way around. The acting was brilliant as was the singling. I cannot recommend this enough. You come out feeling on a real high. Even my husband loved it and has been raving about it ever since.
For anyone visiting Toronto, there are many theatres to choose performances from, but I can definitely recommend both the theatre and the performance of Mamma Mia, and promise you will not be disappointed.
