Worst Destination in Freeport

The Club Fortuna is a dive of a resort and should be ashamed to charge people to stay there. From the moment we arrived we were disappointed. We did not have any bell service to bring us to our rooms and we were given 1 key for the 3 people staying in our room. The rooms were dirty and as soon as we opened the door we found our TV remote broken, the bed frame on of of the beds broken, no wash clothes, our back door off the hinge and our safe broken. After spending a while on the phone with Guest Services, we had everything taken care of. The staff was rude and very slow. There were spring breakers at the resort and we had security come bang on our door one morning telling us to come to the front desk as we were being charged $61 for a plastic chair that was found broken behind our hotel building. Although it wasn't our chair, as our chair was still intact on our patio, the hotel manager said if we didn't pay the $61 he would just take it out of the credit card given as a security deposit for the room. We said he couldn't do that and he informed us that he could, and if we opposed he would call the police and have us deported. The food was awful, we weren't able to make reservations for either of the 2 "specialty" restaurants because they were apparently completely booked the whole week. There was nothing to do during the day. The staff had no interactive involvement with the guests. This all inclusive resort claims to have tips and gratuities included, but the bar tenders only served people who had money being waved around. If you weren't willing to throw money to them, you would wait anywhere from 25-35 minutes to be served at the bar. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

Fortuna Beach

The beaches are the best; my favorite beaches are Fortune Beach and Byberry Beach. When you walk out on the beach and feel that powdery sand through your toes, your vacation has begun! Also, there is a restaurant at this beach called Banana Bay and they have some of the best food on the island, try their banana bread, its divine! Additional tips about Freeport: The native shows at the beach in Port Lucaya are great too, a must see and not as expensive as I thought. I believe I paid about $30 which included a show and my meal.

Viva Diving

The equiptment here was the worst we've seen anywhere. Every regulator I was given was broken in some way - two had broken depth gauges, one had a faulty pressure gauge, and one was unusable (water passed through the reg. instead of air). I didn't go diving my last scheduled day because I felt I was taking my life into my hands.

The shop also has some shady practices with respect to hidden charges. There is a sheet in their office with a list of dive sites that have surcharges, but when they take you diving they don't ask or tell you where they're bringing you - they just slap the charges on later. I don't know if this is illegal in the Bahamas but it would be in the U.S.

The divemasters were fine, at a better shop we'd be happy to dive with them again. But the management and equipment issues at this shop ruined my enjoyment of what should have been a great dive trip.

Each night was something different. The entire staff is very talented. They put on singing and dancing shows, and there was even a modelling show (the models came from across the USA). All-inclusive.

Kayaking

We each tried our own kayak, then took out a double-seated one so we can enjoy the scenery together. The water was peaceful most days, sometimes too peaceful to try wind surfing, but we did that on a couple different days.
