The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall is Sarasota's primary center for travelling theater and music productions. The 'purple cow', nicknamed for it's rounded shape and lavender coloring, is located just north of downtown Sarasota on the waterfront. Home to a wide range of performances, from road productions of Broadway shows to rock concerts and Chinese acrobats, the Van Wezel also hosts regular jazz evenings on the water, special events for kids, and lectures and seminars.
Many locals end up at the hall at least once a year, and a good many make it a regular stop most weekends. Tickets to events can be of almost any price, but $20-40 is the norm. The acoustics are fantastic, the seating very pleasant, it's not too hard to get in or out of, and it's not a bad stroll from downtown after a nice evening dinner.
