Mill Top Tavern

Mill Top Tavern is a local favorite. The building is over 115 years old. The mill Top Tavern has live music every day. This cool little place is all about the atmosphere. It has an open-air deck seating, which offers you a good view. You can watch the pedestrians on George Street. The outside area is small and is also the smoking area. I like this place because it’s upstairs and you can feel the breeze through your hair. We didn’t have lunch here, but the beer tasted good!Extra information:

Directions: The Mill Top Tavern is located in the Old City, at the old Water Wheel.

The Mill Top Tavern is one of those places you wished were in your neighborhood: friendly, warm, and fun. The old mill were the bar is located has a nice rustic look to it, and if you ask around, they'll tell you that the mill is haunted (everything is haunted in St. Augustine). They play live music every night, and I have to say that over there I have listened to some of the best bands ever. On top of that, the volume is not too loud, which makes it really pleasant to sit around, talk, and drink a beer. Drinks are cheap, especially during happy hour (3pm-7pm), and the nightly specials are awesome as well. The menu is nothing to write home about, but it does the trick if you get suddenly hungry and don't feel like going anywhere else. Bottom line: the Mill Top Tavern is the best pub in town, and you'll want to go back there over and over again!

Mill Top Tavern

Situated in a 19th Century mill, this little bar is a favorite with locals and tourists. The Mill Top Tavern occupies the upstairs of the building, with a rather nondescript souvenir shop residing below. This cool little hangout is all about the atmosphere. With its open-air deck seating, you can enjoy the evening breeze and an excellent view of the surrounding area. To the sides, you’ll see the bustle of pedestrian traffic along St. George Street and to the rear is an excellent panorama of the Castillo and harbor.

The menu at the Mill Top Tavern is, frankly, nothing to get overly excited about. The food was good, mind you, but it was rather typical bar fare. Burgers, soups, the usual potato skins and chicken fingers appetizers. If you want a solid meal, but aren’t looking for anything out of the ordinary, dining at the Mill Top will suit you just fine. Otherwise, grab some dinner elsewhere then come by here afterwards for drinks and socializing.

Being from Nashville, I live under the illusion that great live music comes a dime a dozen. Traveling to other cities usually reminds me that this simply isn’t so in most places. So, when I read that the Mill Top Tavern was known for it’s top-notch musical entertainment, I greeted the news with my usual skepticism. As it turned out, I was pleasantly surprised with the caliber of performers on tap at this bar. I was able to catch parts of a couple of acts during my stay, as well as hearing some as I strolled past on other evenings. My verdict is that the musical offerings at Mill Top Tavern are consistently good. The space allotted for singers or a band isn’t very large, so it tends toward the singer-songwriter or acoustic variety. One night, as I walked past, I did hear some decent island music wafting on the breeze that indicated they can squeeze a full band in when the need arises.

I would describe the Mill Top Tavern as a lively, fun place to spend some time, though it stops somewhere short of raucous. For live music, it’s one of only a couple of places in the Old Town area that I found to be worth the effort. Easily in my top five drinking venues of St. Augustine, I might even slide it into the top three. It rated multiple visits on my trip and I think it warrants at least a drop by for anyone who enjoys the bar and pub scene. The only draw back may be its popularity. At times, seating is at a premium, so you could find yourself doing the old stand and lean until a table opens up. If so, there are worse things to do than sip a brew while gazing across the moonlit bay, grooving on tunes, even if you do have to stand for a bit. If only all of life was so hard.
