Description: Okay, I have been to the Dixie Stampede many times in the past but this was the first time I had gone with my 5 year old. It was a totally different experience and seeing it through his eyes made it all the better.
My son has an aversion to lights and loud noises. I was concerned that this might be too much for him. As it turned out, he's okay with loud noises as long as they are animal related.
The show is non-stop action and fun. The action continues while you're eating. It lasted about 1 1/2 hours and they never really stop the whole time. There are challenges, stunts, comedy skits, musical numbers, etc. Yes, some of it is cheesy. We generally don't expect to see Southern Belles with hoop skirts that light up with bulbs and I don't recall the Cherokee using blacklight paint. Still, it's all in good fun.
The food is actually pretty good. You don't get utensils, of course, but this is really only a problem for me with the soup. I am not into drinking soup. It feels...weird. The chicken, pork, potato, corn, roll, and apple turnover are all fantastic though. You could do worse at an area restaurant. We HAVE done worse.
The lumberjack thing was interesting to me but I don't think my son thought it was that impressive. So what, people were cutting logs. Bring on the racing chickens again! I liked them, though.
My only complaint is that it was my son's birthday. I wish they had called him out to do something. A little recognition would have been fun for him. But, oh well. He loved the buffalo and the pigs and chickens. He talked about it all the way home. And asked to go back again.
For two adults and one child it cost us $130 for preferred seating. Yes, this was high. However, we've been paying about $50 for dinner anyway so that made it about $80 for the show. Still high, but you do know what you're getting.
