Foxy's and the Soggy Dollar Bar

When you go boating from St. John into the British Virgin Islands, you have to register, pay the entry fee, and show your passport. While all of that is taking place (our boat captain took care of it), you should stroll down the beach about 200m to Foxy's.

It is a fun beachside bar where you can relax and listen to the actual Foxy perform. It doesn't get any more laid-back. Everyone is just hanging out (including the wait staff), drinking a few cocktails, chatting, and listening to Foxy come up with clever lyrics that incorporate the audience. No matter where you are from, you can expect Foxy to tell a joke related to your hometown or sing a song that does the same. I still use a couple of his jokes. Although I must say that no one laughed as much as Foxy at his own jokes. He is a bit of an institution, but he still performs like he has for the past few decades.

We were there on a regular day, but Foxy's bar hosts a variety of big events, including a very famous Halloween and New Year's Party. The harbor fills up for these events, and I have heard they get pretty crazy.

After Foxy's, cruise around the island to the Soggy Bottom Bar. There is a beautiful white-sand beach and a very popular bar. Make sure you ask for the Painkiller (the signature drink). The name comes from the fact that there is no dock, so you are forced to swim to the beach (presumably with your dollars in your bathing suit). There are hammocks and a lively crowd. We really enjoyed this stop.

New Year's Eve

Apparently Foxy's is somewhat of a legend down in the Virgin Islands. Foxy (yes, there really is a Foxy, and he runs the joint) built this bar-type thing out of driftwood on the beach on Jost Van Dyke. He has New Years parties every year, and some other bashes too. Well, the one for New Year's 2000 was the best damn party I've ever been to. The strip next to Foxy's has acquired some other bars and little shops. The place was crazy. People everywhere. And more alcohol than you can ever imagine. The place was loaded beyond belief. Food, drinks, music, dancing...if I had known more than two people there it might've been even cooler. I've heard the expensive festivities inside the building Foxy built for the occasion weren't all that worth the money, but the scene outside was madness. The harbor was filled with boats. Fireworks at midnight. Definitely go to Foxy's if you hear he's throwing a party.
