The Gator Club

I had not been to the Gator Club in over 5 years and guess what? It is still the same, which is not a good thing. It’s very crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. The band is way too loud, and if you want to make it to the restroom way back in the corner, you had better prepare for a 15-minute walk through the overcrowded place. The drink prices are way too high, even for Sarasota, and you will wait a while for your drink. Beware of the drunken 20-something’s in the later hours.

The Gator Club was a very beautiful and large two-story bar with live music downstairs and pool tables and cigars upstairs, along with a quieter side room adorned with presidential-type decor and beautiful wood.

It was a sophisticated but not at all stuffy bar. The prices were higher than what I'm used to (Guinness was $5.50 for a can and Harp was $5 a bottle), but the atmosphere made up for it. They had a nice selection of cigars in the upstairs bar, and cigar smoking is allowed throughout the bar.

The music was great and was performed by a group of men in their 40’s and 50’s who sounded very professional and were able to fill up the bar.

We didn't spend anytime downstairs because of the crowd but were able to take the beautiful open staircase up to the second floor, where we could still hear the music while we enjoyed a cigar and Guinness.

There were no other bars around this part of town. Across the street is a great outdoor-only restaurant called Mattison's that makes for a great evening of dining and nightlife.
