Paramount Theatre

Paramount Theatre had its beginning, built in 1931, in Art Deco and as a great movie "palace" through the 1930s, then suffered three decades of decline and neglect. It was purchased in 1972 by the Board of Directors of the Oakland Symphony and restored. The Oakland Symphony, the Oakland Ballet, performing arts, and musicians perform here, and there are movies during the off-season. People in formalwear mingle with people in blue jeans at these events during the breaks.

Tours are available the first and third Saturday of each month, promptly at 10am for $1 at the box office at 21st St/Broadway. Children must be at least 10 years old, and adult chaperones are required. Some areas are not wheelchair accessible.

Movies are shown occasionally on Friday evenings at 8pm. Doors open one hour prior to the show, so you have time for a cocktail at the bar. Thirty minutes prior to showtime, the Mighty Wurlitzer will serenade you to your seat for $6. It's a great way to experience this theatre. No babies or children under three are allowed.

Box office opens Tuesday to Friday noon-5:30pm, Saturday noon-5pm

The Paramount Theatre, located in Downtown Oakland, is a shining example of the highest in Art Deco architecture and ambience. For those not familiar with downtown Oakland, it is a collector's delight of Art Deco architecture in various states of repair. The Paramount Theatre has been fully restored to its neon-and-nickel glory. The Oakland Symphony and the Oakland Ballet perform here. The Paramount also hosts a number of contemporary music artists, from John Lee Hooker to Melissa Etheridge. A good and inexpensive way to savor the ambience and art is to go to the Friday night movie. The Paramount screens classic films on their big screen on Friday nights during the off-season. Admission is $5 and the shows typically start at 8pm. Check out their website for more information.

The theatre is conveniently located two blocks from the 18th and Broadway BART station, making it accessible from San Francisco and other parts of the East Bay. Street parking is readily available and free after 6pm.

On Broadway, just down from the 19th Street BART(Bay Area Rapid Transit) station is the Paramount Theatre. Built in 1931, the theatre is a shrine to Art Deco, and, depending on the night, a great place to hear the Oakland East Bay Symphony, see a classic movie, or listen to a blues legend wail away. If you attend a performance at the Paramount, don't be surprised when you notice both tuxedoes and blue jeans in the same room. This is just part of the West Coast lifestyle. During intermission, you can rub elbows with all kinds downstairs at the bar. The Paramount is one of the great buildings of the East Bay. To get a better idea of what the Paramount offers, you can tour it the first and third Saturdays of every month for $1, or go to www.paramounttheatre.com. The web site has a number of excellent photographs of both the exterior and interior.
