Blue Parrot Hotel & Beach Club

The Blue Parrot is a beachside club In Playa. Its opposite a good drinking hole called OM which is worth going to for drinks before the scene at Blue Parrot gets going.

As of April ’06, the famous fire juggling shows had been cancelled after a mishap caused the Palapa roof to burn down. Don’t fear, the roof is fixed but as of yet the fire people have yet to return!!!

Blue Parrot is big and brash and on the night we went the $10 cover got you 2 beers.

The far end of the club (outdoor) has a DJ spinning all the American charts from Kanye West to Madonna with a definite "sausage-fest" feel to the packed dance floor. Lots of youngsters bumping and grinding with a definite spring break feel.

If you are single and female, this is certainly the dance floor to meet fellow Americans or locals.

Although fenced in (to stop tourist drowning most likely) the ocean is within sight and sound above the pumping DJ, so you certainly feel like this is a vacation club.

Closer to the entrance, and under the newly constructed Palapa roof, was more my taste in music with a DJ spinning house tunes. The dance floor was tough going with all the sand but this side was not packed at all, leaving plenty of room to move.

A round bar separates the two sides. Position yourself correctly and you can hear both DJs competing for dancers.

I liked this place, and it’s definitely a popular spot for partying.

Blue Parrot - Playa del Carmen

Blue Parrot - Playa del Carmen

This is the most popular club in Playa. Their location at the foot of chic 12th street, in the center of Playa del Carmen under a huge palapa, is perfect. The blue Parrot is a combination restaurant, bar, and nightclub that attracts locals and an international clientele of island visitors.

Early in the day you can walk up from the beach to swing at the bar with a cool drink in hand. As the sun sets it's a great location for a casual dinner on the deck, although the service is almost abominable. The setting, on the water with the lights of Cozumel in the distance, is very romantic. Music at this time is quiet, but as the evening wears on it increases both in volume and tempo.

Around 10:30pm begins the steady stream of the nightclub crowd, paying a $5 admission. This is entertainment in itself, ranging in age from 18 to 80, in all sizes, alone, as couples or in groups, in all modes of dress, from beach casual to wedding dressy, from Italian chic to NY sexy, from flip-flops to stiletto heels. They're all here for a good time.

As you enter under the big palapa there are low chairs and sofas, with oriental type rugs on the floor to sit on with low tables. There is no view of the water here. Then comes the long water view bar with swings right on the beach. The dance floor is adjacent, and there is a lot of seating on the sand—again on low stools with low tables. At 11pm, there's a "fire show" where dancers twirl fire-lit batons and swing flaming balls on a chain... they even dance in the fire on the floor. They're all very energetic and talented, definitely worth seeing at least once during your vacation.

After the show it's full blast disco with everyone dancing, even on the bar. Service at the bar, and with roaming bartenders, is swift and efficient even when people are shoulder to shoulder. Don't expect to run a tab here because you pay as you go. Don't miss it, this is the place to "see and be seen" in Playa at night—and to top it off, you'll also have a great time.

The Blue Parrot

Most restaurant beach clubs seem to carry on into the night with music and lively bar scenes. The Blue Parrot, is an old standby in Playa. We saw all kinds there, but the place seems to be frequented by the "Grateful Dead" set and the place had a hippie carnival atmosphere. You can get a henna tattoo while you sip a watery "rum y coca" and watch hippie chicks dancing to American music.

Its a scene, and locally famous, around long before the hurricane.

Nightlife is tops in Playa, bars rarely close before 6 a.m. start out at the Blue Parrot, known for its stage, tables and dance floor on the beach, and its bar with swings.
