When we arrived on Monday, our cabbie told us that the electricity at the Bellagio had gone off the day before. At home, we grow impatient if the electricity is off for 15 minutes, and this is a multimillion-dollar hotel. Fortunately, we were staying at the Mirage, but we had made plans to see O. My husband tried every day to get an assurance that the show would go on Wednesday night. Finally, on Wednesday, the power was on and the performance was scheduled. My husband made me go early that evening because he was so anxious. Still unable to pick up our tickets, we went to the old Barbary Coast casino, where a huge Elvis impersonator was singing some of our favorites to a small crowd. It was free, he was excellent, and we began to get into a better mood.
When we returned to the Bellagio, there was a long line of people waiting for tickets and computers were still down. Nevertheless, with our confirmation number in hand, we purchased our tickets. I thought that the show should be awesome at that price and after all that difficulty. Our spirits were lifted somewhat by an extremely nice group of security people who permitted us to go in and sit down. We were very early, but enjoyed sitting in the theater, which is more impressive than many in Vegas. It was interesting to me that they sell popcorn. When the show finally was about to begin, there were some strange-looking people in costume circulating around the theater. Two mimes came out. We thought they were rather rude and in the spotlight too long. We wanted the "real" show to begin.
When the curtain rose, there was activity everywhere and the opening was dynamic. A stage of water that can be controlled is unique. (O is eau, the French word for water.) The acrobatics were amazing. The athletes do precision dives, jumps, tosses, etc. It is Cirque du Soleil, after all. However, my husband began to doze when the two mimes came out again. He has seen Mystere and thinks it's better. We had expected so much from O that it just wasn't as electric as we had hoped. Pardon the pun. Maybe you'll expect less and enjoy it more.
