Indeed, I want to cry. I'm leaving this entry in my journal with the hope that Smalls might come back, but it looks like it's gone out of business. I'm trying to figure out how such a NYC staple can fail....
Smalls is a great place to go if you don't really have plans on a weekday and you want to hear some live music. It's called Smalls because the jazz is played in a very small room. Consequently, on weekend nights there could be a really long line to get in (so, I don't recommend it for weekends).
But, on weekdays, jazz is played from 10pm until 5 in the morning. There is no cover. It's BYOB, but Smalls serves basic drinks for free. Before the non-smoking laws, people would go there and hang out for hours and smoke loads of cigarettes. I suppose it's non-smoking now. It'd be interesting to see people listen to jazz and not smoke.
