La Boom

La Boom is located on the far end of the Hotel Zone, across the street from the Costa Real Hotel. Since it was just across the street from our hotel, we figured it couldn't hurt to go check it out. From the outside, the club looks kind of like a dark cabaret, with "La Boom" written in huge red letters over the door. Just inside the door, the bouncer stands in a small foyer, so you can't see inside the club as you pay your cover. Thursday night was Ladies Night so cover for us was only $5 for all-you-can-drink -- we figured we could leave if it sucked.

Once inside the club, we discovered that the place was DEAD. It was just before midnight and there were maybe 10 people there. But the bartenders were very friendly (they kissed us all on the hand) and hooked us up with some drinks, and we sat down near the dance floor. The dance floor was fairly large and sunken into the floor, but there was only a lone guy dancing all by himself on it. The music was hard core techno. There was plenty of seating at different levels all around the dance floor (more than in any other club I saw in Cancun), and another bar along the back wall of the club, in addition to the large square bar just inside the front door. After a while, we ended up talking to a couple of guys there (who had paid $25 to get in) and they told us we needed to go to Señor Frog's.

After talking to a bunch of different people in Cancun, they say that Wednesday night is La Boom's biggest night. They play all different kinds of music and it gets packed with people (and cover is $28 for everyone for all you can drink).

These were some wild and crazy parties! I traveled in March when the parties are geared towards spring break. Drink all you can and don't sleep. If you don't want to party, don't go to Cancun ever!! One price to drink all night. Cover charges are higher, due to the free liquor for the night. Caution!! Don't of course forget to be responsible.

I met four ladies from my home area while at the beach of my hotel. We were all on vacation for the week, so we decided to check out one of the "hot spots" that the younger people kept talking about. I really was uncertain of my expectations for the evening, but I knew that there would be dancing.

At the entrance to the club was a group of about 50 young teenagers who were on their senior trips. They set a negative tone for the evening from the beginning, as they were obnoxious and demanding. Their chaperones were not far behind them in their rudeness. However, the four ladies and I decided to venture forth and try to see what could be made of our evening.

We danced and socialized and had a pleasant evening among ourselves. The music was loud, of course, but seemed to be a more brash sounding style than there was at the other clubs. Of course, there were many more people in La Boom.

The age group tended to be between 18 - 25. The clients were mostly 'whiny' and pampered, selfish, and did not have proper social skills. I found that the best way to find enjoyment here was to be in a group and to stay together.

Because of my preferences at my age (49), I doubt that I will return to La Boom. But the experience would probably be different for someone in their 20's or 30's.
