Phantom of the Opera

This was my first trip to Broadway, and I chose this show based on several recommendations. I wasn't sorry with the choice. The show was amazing, much better than the recent movie. The theater is gorgeous on the inside, and is located close to Times Square. This made it easy to find, and also made it nice to walk around Times Square before and after. Parking was very convenient, there is a parking garage about a half block away. The price for the parking was a bit expensive though, and I would suggest making a reservation to be sure there is a spot for you. Very good show for your first visit to Broadway, or your 100th.

Something about a Broadway musical is always exciting! The crowds, the glamour, the lights! So I was thrilled when we got to see one of the longest running shows on Broadway. I was less thrilled when I found out my group had purchased tickets in the last row, of the last balcony of the theater. I was even less thrilled with the actual show. Maybe it’s because I’m not fond of opera. Or it could be that, just like Cats Andrew Lloyd Webber's other monstrosity, it just really isn’t that good. Certain songs, like music of the night are spectacular and effects like the crashing chandelier are amazing. But these pieces alone cannot save a ho–hum play. Save your money and go see something else.

I love the music from Phantom of the Opera. I grew up knowing the songs, so I did enjoy that part of the show. There are a few dramatic elements related to the chandelier and the phantom that make the show memorable. However, the execution is a bit hokey.

Center orchestra seats are fairly close to the stage and offer the best vantage point for the show. This show is not worth full price tickets. Check or to see if you can get discount tickets in advance. Or, go to the TKTS booth in Times Square the day of the show to see if tickets are available there. Tickets from TKTS are up to 50% off.

This is a great show, and a show that people love and keep coming back to see. It is also a very easy show to buy tickets for, since so many people have already seen it. It has been running for years, and if you have never seen it, you should plan on making a stop one evening. It's a wonderful love story with a great score by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This is a great show for the family, and amazes folks when it comes to effects. Candles come up from the stage, a boat is floated, a chandelier falls from the theater, and the whole opening number is amazing when they transform from the auction to the opera house. So go and see the music of the night!!

See you in the dark!

You can also get good seats at the last minute for this show, but on the weekends it might be a little harder, as this show is popular with bus tours.

The Majestic Theatre is great. Every seat in the house is good. The $90 per person is well worth it for a great seat in the middle section.
