When my wife told me that this weekend was area-appreciation weekend at the Branson Variety Theater, with all seats only $10 for people living in the area, and suggested that we see Spirit of the Dance, I would have rather stuck a pencil in my eye. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Irish dancing, but I thought that I would be bored watching the same style of dance for 2 hours. Was I ever wrong!!! Spirit of the Dance is one of the best shows I’ve seen in Branson!
While the main theme of the show was Irish dance similar to that of Riverdance, there was a wide variety of style,s with something sure to please everyone. Dance styles ranged from dramatic, foot-stomping Irish dancing to flamenco, salsa, jazz, classical ballet, clogging, tap, and modern dance. The transitions of the styles were dramatically choreographed, and they moved seamlessly from one dance style to the next. The costumes were dazzling, and the dancers attractive and energetic.
The music ranged from Irish ballads to modern jazz and nearly everything in between. Vocalists were talented and the chosen music merged seamlessly with the dance to hold the attention of the audience. There was enough variety to keep everyone, including my 18-year-old son, interested. The lighting and theatrical effects were well-done and added a dramatic flair to the show. The lighting was especially well-done and highlighted the dancers.
My only criticism would have to be of the theater itself. The seating area was fairly flat, and shorter guests might find their view of the stage somewhat obscured by guests sitting in front of them. The only other complaint that I have is that the theater prohibits cameras, and I like to take photographs.
The 2-hour show was so good that the time flew by. When it ended, we were all ready for more, so in spite of my minor complaints, I would have to say that Spirit of the Dance is one of the best shows I have seen in Branson. Its high-energy dance, dazzling lighting and theatrical effects, beautiful costumes, and top-notch choreography combine to make this show a do-not-miss attraction while in Branson.
