The Big Shot & The High Roller at Stratosphere

The Big Shot & The High Roller at Stratosphere

I'm terrified of heights and becoming more and more claustrophobic everyday. So what, you ask, would cause me to get in a crowded elevator and zoom up a thousand feet in the air? My kids wanting to ride these two thrill rides, of course. No one goes for free, even non-riders pay for the view. But it's worth it, believe me.

We waited all week for the winds to calm down enough for this one to be operating, and it was worth the wait. We chose to go at night, to take in all the lights from the strip. It's amazing, all those lights flickering and how busy it all is and then just a few miles out, complete and total darkness.

The ride is a roller coaster that snakes around the base of the top of the Stratosphere Hotel. Note that I said the base of the TOP as in the SPIRE. It's high!!

The roller coaster isn't as thrilling as the other attraction -- THE BIG SHOT. That's the killer here. You get on the seat, they strap you in, shoes optional and then they tell you to count down from 10. And you do, 10, 9, 8, 7 WHOOSH! You're launched into oblivion. Screams were heard and falling shoes were seen.

For those observing, a sturdy railing keeps you "safe" from the strip below, or there's always the air conditioned and glassed observation area that encircles the sphere. Take your cameras here people, the view is incredible, even at night.

Souvenir photos are a must, as they truly capture the terror as the ride is started on 7 or 5 instead of 0, as you think it will be. Other souvenirs are also available, as are refreshments. Long lines are the norm, but there is plenty to look at - time flies really.

This is a stop NO ONE should miss on their Vegas vacation. Our kids loved it and they still talk about to this day. Ride if you dare -- I warned ya.

Roller Coaster atop the Stratosphere Tower

Roller Coaster atop the Stratosphere Tower

The Stratosphere Tower is the tallest free-standing observation tower in the U.S. It is over 100 stories high. It is very close to the Las Vegas Hilton, where we stayed, and we watched the roller coaster from our hotel and decided we might be fool enough to get on it. When we finally did, both my husband and I had the exact same thought. Why are we here? If something goes wrong, we are going to die. The roller coaster itself is not that bad. It's location, location, location! The narrow rails and cars go around the top of the tower as you look down on all of Las Vegas and the surrounding area below you. The only thing higher is the part of the tower on which you can be lifted up and dropped. Of course, your fall stops before you hit the deck where the roller coaster is located. My husband and I did not do that, but having survived the roller coaster, we plan to do that next time. It's easy to be brave or foolish from afar.

Stratosphere Tower and Thrill Rides

Stratosphere Tower and Thrill Rides

At 1,149 feet, the tower is the tallest building west of the Mississippi, the tallest free standing observation tower in the United States, and the fifth tallest building in the U.S. When they strap you into the ride you can't see the tower you are on; it just looks like you are being shot into thin air with your legs dangling over the edge. Great heart pounding fun. I still can't believe I had the nerve to do it, and I probably wouldn't have had that without the goading of my childhood friend and male cousin. Don't be a scaredy cat. Ride this. You will be proud you did!

Stratosphere Tower and Thrill Rides

The Stratosphere tower is one of the more recognizable landmarks on the Strip, a tower standing over 1000 feet high. In fact, I was told by an employee there that it is the tallest structure west of the Mississippi and that it was originally intended to be about 2000 feet high, but that plan was nixed by the FAA. At any rate, it is a very tall building and the views from the observation tower at the top are unbelievable.

However, having said that, there is nothing else to recommend about the Stratosphere. The two thrill rides at the top are a waste of your money. The "High Roller" roller coaster has a nice view but the ride is suitable only for the very meek. The "Big Shot" is marginally better and also has a nice view, but is a rip-off for about 30 seconds of ride time. As for the Stratosphere itself, it is located in a neighborhood where you wouldn't want to go out on foot, the service is bad, and the slot club promotion is useless unless you intend to come back in the next nine months or so. The bottom line: if you want to see the view, just get the ticket for the tower ascent and skip the ride tickets (all attraction tickets are ala carte), and don't spend any time at the Stratosphere doing anything else. It's a good quick pit stop on the way to or from Freemont Street. If you must ride the rides, there is a two-for-one coupon in the "Las Vegas Advisor" coupon book, but don't say I didn't tell you that it is still a waste of your money.

STRATOSPHERE TOWER

The Stratosphere is America's tallest observation tower and has two of the world's highest rides located over 100 stories above the ground: The High Roller roller coaster and the Big Shot. Once at the top you can get a 360-degree panorama from both an enclosed deck or the uncovered deck. The day we went was very windy so the rides weren't running. Although we were disappointed, we appreciated the fact that those in charge decided to exercise caution.
