Starlight Theatre

Swope Park is also the home of the Kansas City Zoo but for us its main draw was the Starlight Theatre. As dusk approached lines of cars went through the beautiful wrought iron gates and line up to pay $5 to park on the grass. That was a bit of a suprise but who cares, we were about to see Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice and staring Patrick Cassidy and Simone. This is a lovely venue, even the walk to the theatre is pretty. Starlight Theatre is entering its 51st year and is a Kansas City institution. They welcome broadway shows, concerts and the ballet. The theatre is set in 14 acres of grounds and sits nearly 8000 people in a beautiful, under the stars setting. The stage is fully enclosed and covered but the rest of us are sitting outdoors. It was a lovely night with lots of stars and unbelievably no bugs and we had great seats where we could sit back and enjoy our $5 lemonade. With the help of binoculars we were up close and personal. Our seats were only $18 but there were many more expensive seats in front of us , up to $60. Everybody was having a good time around us and it's a delightful experience. I have to admit to curiosity about what happens if it rains but for us, clear weather made for a wonderful evening.
