Who would have thought that Starbucks would become a hit with Filipinos, who are notorious chain smokers and instant coffee drinkers? As it has turned out, the Seattle-based global chain is drawing in Manilans night and day, despite the 'No Smoking' policy and prices that are quite steep by local standards. Soon Starbucks outlets will be as ubiquitous in Metro Manila as other American chains. Admittedly, the coffee is good enough for a hardened smoker to enjoy even without a cigarette. The pastries and sandwiches are not bad either, though the former are on the sweet side.
