Visiting Sahara—Eating at Café

Very interesting to visit this "original casino"—had an old, elegant feel to the casino. Photos of The Beatles and many others who have stayed there—photo of Johnny Carson with a shovel the day of ground breaking. Gorgeous chandeliers all over the ceiling. We ate in the hotel café and the food was very good—husband had breakfast and I had a hamburger—good value.

BJ at the Sahara

The Sahara is one of the older casinos, at the end of the strip next to the newer Stratosphere. The Sahara has the old Vegas charm still, and is my favorite place to gamble. Since my girlfriends and I aren't big-time rollers, we stick to the $1 blackjack tables at the Sahara. We sip our champagne, have fun with the dealers, and sometimes even win. Yes, it is possible to win a nice amount at a one-dollar table. There are also "No Bust" tables at the Sahara that are the bumper bowling of blackjack. Those tables are always full, so you will have to wait. Open, like everywhere, all night, we've gone there after dancing at 5AM. Lots of fun, easy to learn, and without all the pressure of losing money, the blackjack tables at the Sahara are good fun!

Slots at the Sahara

Although the Sahara is a bit run-down on the inside, the staff were some of the friendliest we found on the Strip, and the slots were very kind to us. We ended up here after a hard eight hours of trudging along with the other tourists between the Mirage, Caesar's, the Bellagio, the Venetian, etc., and just wanted somewhere to relax. We sat down at a couple of likely-looking slot machines, and won over $60 within a few minutes of feeding them our quarters and nickels. We took that as a good sign, and spent the next few hours offering some of our winnings back to the slots and the cocktail waitresses. The drinks came faster here than anywhere else we went that weekend, and believe me, after the day we had, it was much appreciated. The crowd was thin at the Sahara casino, but we noticed there was no lack of crowd for the arcade or the roller coaster. We didn't try it (didn't think the loop-de-loop would mix well with the Bloody Marys), but everyone else seemed to enjoy the ride on the coaster as much as we enjoyed our ride on their slots.

The Rat Pack is Back

For a trip down memory lane to Las Vegas of the early 60s, take in the music, comedy, and banter of the new age Rat Pack. Located in the Sahara Hotel's 550-seat Conga Room, a historic trip alone, this evening show recreates the golden days of yesteryear when Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis Jr. were headliners.

The impersonators not only are excellent look-alikes, but also their voices are wonderful and capture their alter-egos. The witty charm and almost off-color references that made Dean Martin a hit then continues now with his modern day Rat Packer. He includes females into his banter with that boyish charm and raw sexual inference. "Joey Bishop" is a stitch and "Sammy Davis Jr." is right on. "Frank Sinatra," with his velvet voice to melt a dozen hearts, is the show's host and tries to keep the other guys in line, but it's a losing battle. He seems the closest to the original of the group. His voice is golden.

For all those young at heart and time, this show is very enjoyable. While it may not have the up to date splash and flash, it's good old down to earth Las Vegas entertainment. By current standards, the show ticket prices are not bad either. There were people in the audience from a 21-year-old celebrating her birthday with Mom and Dad to a 103-year-old woman also celebrating her birthday--facts that were included in Deano's monologue. It was great.
